Hailey`s Grandmother Suspects Mother`s Boyfriend

Aired January 13, 2011 - 20:00:00   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NANCY GRACE, HOST: Breaking news tonight, live, Texas. A 13-year-old cheerleader, broad daylight, leaves home around lunchtime, heads by foot down the street to a little friend`s house for a sleepover. She`s never seen again. Bloodhounds scan the neighborhood and local motel. Police comb that motel surveillance video. No sign of Hailey.

Police seize cell phones belonging to Mommy and the live-in boyfriend, polygraph friends, neighbors. Just hours after we go live with the story, Colorado police, who dismissed Hailey as a runaway, upgrade the case to missing person. Cops search an abandoned cotton gin, comb creek bottoms and the Colorado River.

As police take DNA samples from Hailey`s parents, did Mommy and the boyfriend actually throw a New Year`s Eve party 72 hours after Hailey goes missing? Mommy says no. We learn turmoil in the home before with this boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, threatening to kill mom and Hailey. And oddly, during police interviews after cops ask to see his cell phone, he starts deleting numbers. Then he starts out saying, quote, what a "good girl" Hailey is, but then does a 180, claiming the little 13-year-old girl is promiscuous. She`s 13!

And did he lie about his job and whereabouts that day? Polygraphs gone wrong, including people refusing to take the test, even walking out.

Bombshell tonight. A horrific scenario emerges. Hailey`s grandmother reveals her fear Mommy`s live-in molested 13-year-old Hailey, then murdered her when she threatened to tell. As we go to air, police say they want to do a dig to search underneath Hailey`s home.

As Hailey`s dad goes out to physically search for his missing girl, the boyfriend cuts off all contact with Hailey`s mom, refusing to cooperate with police any longer. In the last hours, more items seized from Hailey`s bedroom, plus the boyfriend`s computer, too. We learn in the last month, relatives try to wrangle custody of Hailey away from Mommy because of this boyfriend. Hailey`s grandmother and mother with us live, taking your calls tonight. Where is 13-year-old cheerleader Hailey Dunn?

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: A 13-year-old cheerleader.

BILLIE DUNN, HAILEY`S MOTHER: I don`t know where my daughter is.

GRACE: Never seen again.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We have several people of interest.

GRACE: What do we know?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I would like to say, I don`t care what people think of me.

GRACE: Billie Dunn is Hailey`s mother.

BILLIE DUNN: Somebody knows where my daughter is.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There`s several things that are red flags here.

BILLIE DUNN: I took a polygraph test. I failed it.

GRACE: (INAUDIBLE) you are concerned the boyfriend has something to do with Hailey`s disappearance.

BILLIE DUNN: That bothers me a lot.

SHAWN ADKINS, MOTHER`S BOYFRIEND: I would never do nothing to that little girl.

GRACE: (INAUDIBLE) zero in on the home of Mommy`s boyfriend.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Shawn Adkins said that he last saw Hailey at 3:15.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There`s a lot of inconsistencies with his story.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Three different times, he went for a polygraph.

ADKINS: (INAUDIBLE)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The first two times, he walked out. The third time, he stayed.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (INAUDIBLE) happened in the boyfriend`s polygraph.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Deception was indicated.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That`s police language for, You didn`t pass.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: Good evening. I`m Nancy Grace. I want to thank you for being with us. Bombshell tonight. A horrific scenario is emerging. Hailey`s grandmother reveals her fear, her real fear that Mommy`s live-in boyfriend molested 13-year-old Hailey, then murdered her when she threatened to tell. And as we go to air, police plan a dig underneath Hailey`s home.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BILLIE DUNN: My 13-year-old daughter isn`t in my house.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This search does continue.

BILLIE DUNN: Somebody knows where she is.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There`s always been a criminal investigation.

GRACE: Where is 13-year-old cheerleader Hailey Dunn?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The person best to answer that would be Billie or Shawn.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Police did indicate to us that Shawn Adkins is a person of interest.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She don`t like Shawn being there.

GRACE: We learn multiple polygraphs gone wrong.

BILLIE DUNN: Why did you fail that test?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Investigators have gone on record.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Shawn Adkins, who is the boyfriend, is not a credible witness.

GRACE: What questions did they ask you?

BILLIE DUNN: They asked if I knew anything about the disappearance of Hailey.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Because of the drug use.

BILLIE DUNN: I had taken some pain medicine and antibiotics for a bad tooth.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They do not believe that these are credible witnesses.

GRACE: When was the last time you absolutely are positive you saw Hailey?

BILLIE DUNN: I saw her Sunday night.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We have been beating the pavement since day one.

BILLIE DUNN: I`m a credible witness. I`m not a liar.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: So stay tuned.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: Straight out to Alexis Weed on the story. Alexis, what`s the latest?

ALEXIS WEED, NANCY GRACE PRODUCER: Nancy, we`re hearing today -- we talked to Hailey Dunn`s paternal grandmother. She`s here with us tonight. She`s telling us that her theory behind this case is that Shawn Adkins raped Hailey Dunn and then killed her, Nancy.

GRACE: Taking your calls live tonight is Hailey`s mother, who I would like to emphasize comes on voluntarily. She has not lawyered up, she does not have a defense attorney, unlike her boyfriend, the live-in, who`s moved out and cut off contact with her, now refusing to cooperate with police. Mom is with us, Billie Dunn, joining us there in Hailey`s home. Also with us, Hailey`s grandmother, Connie Jones.

I want to go straight out to you, ladies. I want to thank you for being with us. Everyone, take a look at the photos...

BILLIE DUNN: Thank you.

GRACE: ... of Hailey that we are showing you. The tip line, 325-728- 5294. Many people believe this girl could still be alive.

With us, Billie Dunn and Connie Jones. I want to go first to Connie Jones. This is Hailey`s grandmother. Ms. Jones, thank you for being with us. I understand that it wasn`t that long ago you tried to get custody, relatives tried to get custody away from Mommy? You wanted Hailey out of that home, is that correct?

CONNIE JONES, HAILEY`S PATERNAL GRANDMOTHER: Yes, ma`am. That was last January.

GRACE: What happened?

JONES: Well, I had went on vacation, and when I come back, Clint had said that he had Hailey and then Billie (INAUDIBLE) that he ended up getting her back and everything. And I didn`t even know any of this was going on until I came back.

GRACE: You didn`t know what was going on?

JONES: No, ma`am. All I know is that Clint tried to take her because Hailey wanted to stay with Clint. And (INAUDIBLE) wanted her back (INAUDIBLE)

GRACE: Ms. Jones -- Ms. Jones, your theory that the live-in boyfriend sexually attacked the little girl and that he killed her when she threatened to tell -- what do you base that on?

JONES: Because Hailey had told me (INAUDIBLE) him been living there in the past that he would walk around at nighttime, and the hall light would be on, and she could see his shadow at her door, at the foot of the door. She could see his legs at the foot of the door, just at her door, just standing there. And it scared her. And I don`t know, things just don`t add up that Monday. Why would he leave his job? He didn`t quit, he just left his job.

GRACE: You know what`s odd about that, Connie Jones -- with us taking your calls live is Hailey`s mother, Billie Dunn, and her grandmother, Connie Jones. Ms. Jones, I asked that question several times last night, and this is what I got, that he showed up around 6:00 AM to work. He went to the soft drink machine, he got a Coke or whatever he got, he took a few sips out of it, he looked at his boss and walked out. There wasn`t an argument. He didn`t get fired. He didn`t say, I quit. He just walked out. He wasn`t there over 15 minutes. Now, why do you drive all the way to work, which is well over 20 miles to where he works...

JONES: Yes.

GRACE: ... drink a soda, take a look at your boss and walk out? And then the cell phone pings place him back in Colorado City, there at the home. He did not go straight to his mother`s, the way he said he did.

But I want to get back to what you told me. Hailey was afraid of him?

JONES: Yes, ma`am. She told me...

GRACE: Why...

JONES: ... a number of times that she was afraid of him.

BILLIE DUNN: Why didn`t nobody tell me?

GRACE: Well, hold on, Billie. Hold on, Billie Dunn. What was she afraid of? What specifically would she say, Ms. Jones?

JONES: That she was afraid of him walking around at night. She said that he`d go in the bathroom and he`d use Billie`s phone and talk to people and then come out and just stand by her door. She said he -- she was just afraid of him. At this time, she was only, like, 11.

GRACE: Did she tell you anything other than him standing by her bedroom door at night?

JONES: No. She said he never tried any advances toward her or anything and...

GRACE: Did you ask her?

JONES: Yes, ma`am. I asked her a lot if he ever tried anything to her. And I told her, I said, If he ever tries anything, you tell your mom and your dad. I said, Don`t -- I said, He can`t -- he`s not going to get away with it, Hailey, if he ever touches you in any way.

GRACE: And what would she say? When you would tell her that, what would she say?

JONES: She said that she would and everything. And the last couple of months, I hadn`t seen her very much because her dad moved over to Colorado City. And she usually spends the night, sometimes the weekend with me, and I hadn`t seen her that much. But she always called me, almost every day.

GRACE: Have you shared your theory with your son, Hailey`s father?

JONES: Yes, I have. I told him that she was afraid of him.

GRACE: What did he say?

JONES: I don`t remember what he said. I know he was concerned, but I don`t really remember what he said. There were times he would talk to Billie, they would get into an argument. So I guess they just quit talking to each other.

GRACE: To Billie Dunn, Hailey`s mother. What is your response?

BILLIE DUNN: It appalls me. Why would nobody tell me this? If she was concerned about that, why not tell me or Clint a long time ago? And I never heard of anybody fighting me for custody until tonight, just now.

GRACE: Well, Billie, if she`s telling her grandmother and the grandmother`s telling the father, she is telling people! She`s telling people she was afraid of your boyfriend.

BILLIE DUNN: Why didn`t her grandmother not tell me or her father, is what I`m saying.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A 13-year-old little girl has gone missing. This is her, Hailey Dunn.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Pretty much everybody is a suspect.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Inconsistent in their statements.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: A person of interest in this case.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hope is fading.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hailey Dunn walked out the doors of this house and was never seen again.

BILLIE DUNN: I want Hailey to know that. I just want her to walk through the door.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Still no sign of the missing girl.

BILLIE DUNN: It`s frustrating.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The last person to see Hailey Dunn alive was her mother`s boyfriend.

BILLIE DUNN: In the beginning, she didn`t like him.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: She didn`t like Shawn being there.

BILLIE DUNN: A neighbor saw her out in my back yard.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The mom`s boyfriend.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Red flags being raised on Shawn.

ADKINS: My main focus is just Hailey.

BILLIE DUNN: He was very tearful, told me, you know I love you, you know I love Hailey and David. You know I couldn`t do this.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Shawn Adkins is not a credible witness.

ADKINS: I would never do nothing to that little girl.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: We are taking your calls live. But first out to Priscilla Luong, with CNN affiliate KTAB joining us from Abilene, Texas. Priscilla, what`s the latest on your end?

PRISCILLA LUONG, KTAB CORRESPONDENT: Well, Nancy, we obtained two affidavits today that reveal what electronic items were taken from the Dunns` house. We learned that several MP3 players, a CD, a flash drive was taken of Hailey`s. And we also learned through another affidavit that Shawn`s laptop was also seized in the investigation.

GRACE: Now, wasn`t he using his mom`s computer?

LUONG: Well, Nancy, that was not revealed inside the affidavit, so we`re unable to confirm those details with law enforcement.

GRACE: To Michael Board, WOAI Newsradio. What can you tell me about police wanting to do a dig underneath Hailey`s home?

MICHAEL BOARD, WOAI NEWSRADIO: Yes, it`s a continuing the investigation. They`re continuing to look at all options in this case. Not only are they looking around the home, looking in root cellars, looking in a shed behind the house for clues, looking under the home in this case, also looking north of Colorado City. That is where, according to these police affidavits that we got, we know that the night that Hailey Dunn went missing, Billie -- I`m not saying this, police are saying this -- that in their interviews, Hailey and -- excuse me -- Billie and her boyfriend went north of Colorado City to purchase illegal narcotics. That`s what`s said in these police affidavits.

Also it is said in these police affidavits that Shawn told police that if they wanted to find Hailey, one place they would look is Scurry County, Texas, which is north. That`s really become the center of this investigation.

GRACE: To you, Billie Dunn. I want to hear your response. And I don`t have you on to rake you over the coals. I`ve got to ask you the hard questions. But I want you to tell us your side and what you want and what you know and what you want searchers and the public to know to help find your girl. But you`ve got to answer to these allegations. What about this? I know that you used your ATM twice in a row that Monday night when Hailey goes missing, one right after the next. Now, according to these police affidavits, illegal drugs were purchased. What`s the story, Billie?

BILLIE DUNN: I know. And I don`t want to get into it any more. I just want to clear things up. We did go to the ATM, and the reason there was two withdrawals is because I didn`t know how much money I had in there. I know we were broke. We pulled money out for gas, food, whatever. We did go to the north side of town for maybe 15 minutes just to stop by my mom`s house. And she lives on the north side of Snyder. And we came straight home.

GRACE: OK, back to you, Michael Board. What specifically are police saying about illegal drug purchases that evening?

BOARD: These are the affidavits. These are the interviews that police did with Billie and Shawn. In here, you can look at the exact thing they said. They went to Scurry County in here to purchase illegal narcotics. This isn`t me saying this. This isn`t a reporter speculating about what he believes they did with their time. This is what they told police and this is what police have put into documents that they used to get search warrants for their house.

GRACE: Well, what I find significant is that I`m reading exactly the same affidavit you have, Michael Board, and it claims that the drugs were purchased in Scurry, Texas. And as you recall, last night, Jean Casarez reported that while talking to police, the boyfriend says, You can find her over in Scurry Texas. That`s where you`ll find her.

OK, Billie Dunn, I`ve got the police affidavit right here in my hand verbatim. I`ve got hundreds of pages of documents that we have combed through. And they say you used (ph) -- at 6:19, 6:20 PM, you withdraw $60, then $80 cash. It was then determined through a volunteer -- voluntary admission of you, Billie Dunn, the money was used to purchase illegal narcotics from a person in Scurry County.

BILLIE DUNN: Right. And I read that, too. The only narcotics I had were prescribed to me, and I even showed those to Priscilla to get them on tape.

GRACE: OK, so are you telling me that you got, basically, a refill of prescription drugs not from the drugstore? Is that what the illegal narcotic was?

BILLIE DUNN: No. I`m not even sure what day I got the prescriptions. I think it was before then.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BILLIE DUNN: We love her. We all need her back.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The search for Hailey Dunn begins.

BILLIE DUNN: I left from work and went to the police station in Colorado City and reported her missing.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BILLIE DUNN: I`m scared to death that somebody hurt her.

I saw her Sunday night probably around 10:00. Monday morning, I looked in her room, and it was dark and it looked like she was laying in bed. But I didn`t go touch her, make sure that was her.

My 13-year-old daughter isn`t in my house. Somebody knows where she is.

Right now, it`s not feeling good to me that I`m going to be able to hold my daughter again.

If I have to be drug through the mud a little bit to get her face out there and the fact that my 13-year-old daughter`s missing, then so be it.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: You are seeing video there of searchers combing the area. In a few moments, we`ll show you interviews with them.

We`re taking your calls live. Out to Priscilla in Illinois. Hi, Priscilla.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hi, Nancy.

GRACE: Hi, dear. What`s your question?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It`s so good to talk to you! I was tuning in to your show yesterday, and you had asked Hailey`s mom if she had made any changes to her room or anything.

GRACE: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And I know that she had said that the only thing that anybody has really done was folded a couple clothes. And I was just wondering, why were there no sheets on her bed?

GRACE: Let`s go out to Billie Dunn. Why weren`t there sheets on her bed?

BILLIE DUNN: The investigators took her sheet off. I`d asked them to use the sheet for the dogs to get the scent, but I think they kept it.

GRACE: To Aneesa in Colorado. Hi, Aneesa.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hi, Nancy. Thank you for taking my call. I was wondering if Hailey confided in her friends about what was going on in the house.

GRACE: Good question. What do we know about that? Out to you, Michael Board.

BOARD: Well, what we do know in these same affidavits is that police did interview two friends of Hailey, and they paint a different picture from what we`ve been tolling (SIC). When they brought up to her friends talking about drug uses, two of her friends, two of Hailey`s friends told police that several times in the past, Hailey had mentioned something about trying to obtain some narcotics. We don`t know what they were talking about. But you know, it`s a little bit different picture of Hailey than we had seen so far in the media. And we don`t know how this links into the whole investigation.

GRACE: What do you mean, it`s a different picture?

BOARD: Well, I mean, we`ve seen the whole picture of Hailey in her cheerleader outfit. We`ve been told she`s a straight-A student. We`ve been told that she does cheerleading and track and she gets great grades and all her friends say that she`s the perfect student. And then we learn in these police reports that, you know, maybe she wasn`t completely perfect. You know, maybe she did have a different side. Maybe she did every once in a while experiments with drugs.

GRACE: Well, you know, she`s a 13-year-old girl, and I`m sure she`s living the teenage American experience as it exists today. But I find it pretty hard to believe that this little girl is a promiscuous drug addict, the way she`s being portrayed. I don`t believe that. I do not believe it! I reject it!

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: This is Hailey Dunn`s house, the last place she was seen before disappearing.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Who would want to harm this excellent student?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hailey`s friends and family are...

(END VIDEO CLIP)

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

SENIOR TROOPER SPARKY DEAN, TEXAS DEPT. OF PUBLIC SAFETY: We have several persons of interest.

NANCY GRACE, HOST: Who has changed their story?

BILLIE DUNN, MOM OF MISSING TEEN CHEERLEADER, HAILEY B. DUNN: I don`t know.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: Inconsistency within family members.

DEAN: We have several people of interest.

DUNN: They told me he failed it, I lost it.

JEAN CASAREZ, LEGAL CORRESPONDENT, "IN SESSION": Do you know the whereabouts of Hailey Dunn? It showed deception was indicated in his answer.

SHAWN ADKINS, MISSING TEEN CHEERLEADER MOM`S EX-BOYFRIEND: It really doesn`t bother me, because my main focus is just Hailey.

CASAREZ: He said she could probably be found in Scurry County.

GRACE: What significance is Scurry County?

DUNN: She has a lot of family and friends over there, that`s the only thing I can think of. I don`t have any explanation. I don`t want to defend him.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: I can`t imagine anyone would hurt a 13-year-old girl to which Adkins allegedly responded, yes, it`d be like killing a deer.

(END OF VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: We are taking your calls, out to Maria in Massachusetts, hi, Maria.

MARIA, CALLER FROM MASSACHUSETTS: Hi, Nancy. Thank you for taking my call. My problem here is, I`ve been seeing this story since it broke out. I watch you every night and the mother Billie has no emotion whatsoever. And hearing a mother talking about her daughter being raped and maybe even murdered, and there`s still no emotion.

GRACE: To Billie Dunn. Billie Dun, you`ve been doing a lot of defending yourself. I want to hear your response to that.

DUNN: I have every horrible emotion imaginable. I break down several times in my room by myself. I try my hardest not to do it on TV. But I do try my hardest not to do it around family. I shouldn`t have to be defending my self.

The fact is, Hailey is not in this house, and nobody`s found her. Everybody needs to remember that the whole reason her face is being put out there is because she`s not in her house.

GRACE: Right now, out to Marc Klaas, president and founder of KlassKids Foundation, who went through the same thing many years ago when his daughter went missing.

Weigh in, Marc.

MARC KLAAS, PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER, KLAASKIDS FOUNDATION: First of all, I really admire Billie. I admire the fact that she can come on this show every night and have people trash her, have people accuse her of things. Even in the last few minutes, have another one of your guests do a character assassination on her daughter. Yet she stands tall. She answers all the questions. So I do believe this woman.

Now as far as this business of the grandmother`s thoughts of what`s going on, I`d like to address that quickly. When you don`t know where your child is, particularly over the long term, then your imagination is going to fill in the blanks. And when you`re living a nightmare, which is exactly what these people are living right now, nightmare scenarios most easily come to mind.

And this is just such a horrible situation, and you know despite the fact that her daughters is missing, she seems to be taking it from all sides, and I think she`s doing a heck of a job of standing up to the scrutiny.

GRACE: OK, Marc, let`s break it down and look at the facts that we know.

KLAAS: Sure.

GRACE: We know -- this is what I know. I know the boyfriend -- and Billie Dunn, let`s go on a three box. I want to see Billie and Marc Klaas.

Billie, if I say anything incorrectly, correct me.

DUNN: OK.

GRACE: I know based on what Billie Dunn has told me, that the boyfriend has now moved back home with his mom and he is not talking to her any more. She told me last night he lawyered up. He`s got a defense attorney.

I know that searchers are zeroing in around the area -- around where the mom lives. OK? I know that he walked out on a polygraph, and I know based on what Billie Dunn has told me, and she`s tried to defend him, but she`s also been telling what I perceive to be the truth.

That morning, Marc Klaas, he gets to work, it`s what, 20, 30, 40 miles away? He gets to work 6:00 a.m., punches in, gets a soda, looks at his boss, walks out. And then I know for a fact that he is pinged, because I`ve got it right here in the police documents. He`s pinged back in Colorado City. According to Billie Dunn, you don`t drive through Colorado City to get to his mother`s house, which is where he said he went that day.

KLAAS: Yes. Absolutely.

GRACE: I`d like to know what time he finally shows up there. But why go all the way to work and then just leave after 10 minutes, Marc?

KLAAS: Well, first of all, you don`t, do you? I mean, that`s the reality of it, and every day another little piece of information unfolds --

GRACE: Billie Dunn, I want to hear your thoughts on what I just portrayed. Is that all correct? Has he cut off contact with you?

DUNN: Yes, that is all correct.

GRACE: I`m sorry, I can`t hear you?

DUNN: That`s all correct.

GRACE: No, I can barely hear you. Would you repeat one more time, please?

DUNN: I was just saying that you were correct with all of that.

GRACE: Let`s go to the lawyers. Unleash the lawyers, joining us tonight out of Washington, D.C., Eleanor Odom, felony prosecutor, death penalty qualified. Raymond Giudice, Atlanta defense attorney. Peter Odom, Atlanta defense attorney, joining us out of Atlanta.

Weigh in, Eleanor.

ELEANOR ODOM, FELONY PROSECUTOR, DEATH PENALTY QUALIFIED: Well, Nancy, this is very disconcerting because you`ve got so many stories from the boyfriend. Different things that he said he`s done. So I would look closely at him and any inconsistent statements that he`s made because that can be used later if there`s a trial.

GRACE: Raymond?

RAY GIUDICE, DEFENSE ATTORNEY: That`s the biggest problem his lawyer`s got. His inconsistent statements, and let me link something. They didn`t take that sheet to give it to the dogs for tracking. They took that sheet off the bed to look for male DNA.

And if you add that to what the grandmother is alleging, there`s big trouble in this case for that defense team.

GRACE: Peter Odom?

P. ODOM: My heart goes out here to Billie. She`s in a very tough position. I mean it`s not going to be lost on her, she`s an intelligent, sensitive woman, and it`s not going to be lost on her that the inconsistencies against the boyfriend Shawn are mounting. And --

GRACE: OK, wait a minute. I`m asking you for a defense analysis, and you`re saying, my heart goes out.

OK, Peter, come on.

P. ODOM: Yes.

GRACE: Pretend you`re in court.

P. ODOM: She is --

GRACE: Let`s hear your defense. What would you be advising the boyfriend to do right now?

P. ODOM: She`s a victim. She -- Billie is -- what would I be advising the boyfriend to do? Exactly what he`s doing. Stop cooperating with the police. Because the evidence against him is mounting, and he`s doing nothing but creating more evidence against him every time he opens his mouth it goes to the police station.

GRACE: Back to Billie Dunn, let me see if I can hear you this time.

Miss Dunn, why do police want to dig under your home?

DUNN: Because they asked if there was a way they could get under the home to search. And I told them, sure, we`ll get them under there. There was a place that Clint, when he was here, he boarded up a long time ago so the dogs couldn`t get under there. But I know where it is and we can get them under there.

GRACE: To Connie Jones, this Hailey`s grandmother. Your son, Hailey`s biological father, he hasn`t been able to come on the show because he is out physically looking for Hailey. He is out looking for her. Where has he been looking?

CONNIE JONES, GRANDMOTHER OF MISSING CHEERLEADER HAILEY DUNN: In Odessa. He got a lead from somebody in Odessa, and he`s pursuing it.

GRACE: Do you know what the lead was?

JONES: That she was seen over there with this younger man. And he called me earlier today and he said that he talked to the lady that seen her. And I`m hoping and praying that is her.

GRACE: See, are you saying that there has been a credible sighting of Hailey in Odessa?

JONES: Yes, ma`am.

GRACE: Can you tell us about the sighting?

JONES: He said that they were on the side of the road with a sign, and he said that they (INAUDIBLE) dog and she thought the sign said dogs for sale. And so she stopped and the signs said please help with food or money. And she gave them $5. And she said she was positive that it was Hailey.

GRACE: Who was she with?

JONES: A younger -- a younger man, like maybe in his early 20s, late teens or something.

GRACE: OK, Billie Dunn, any idea who this could be, and have cops told you about a possible sighting in Odessa?

DUNN: No, but Clint did tell me about hearing that about a week and a half ago. And I did tell him to make sure he went to some authority figure to let them know about that.

GRACE: To Dr. Bethany Marshall, psychoanalyst, author of "Dealbreakers".

Bethany, weigh in.

BETHANY MARSHALL, PSYCHOANALYST, AUTHOR OF "DEALBREAKERS": I think Billie is a brave woman for coming on this show and doing everything possible to get her daughter`s name and face out there.

But what I wish Billie would do is fill in the blanks a little bit more. Provide some theories. For instance, when Shawn said that her daughter Hailey was in Scurry County, what is the significance of Scurry County? Did Shawn have any close friends that he was in contact with who were strained --

(CROSSTALK)

GRACE: Hold on, Bethany, that`s a great question.

What about it, Billie Dunn? Scurry County, what`s the connection?

DUNN: Me and Hailey have a lot of friends and family there.

GRACE: You know, it sounds like a lot of people think she`s taken off and is hiding out in Odessa or Scurry County. But the reality is, police have said that simply is not true.

Billie, shed some light on it.

DUNN: It`s a good thought and a good hope, and really the only hope - - the best thing we can hope for is that she would be hiding out, but she`s 13, she took nothing. I didn`t worry about her being a bad kid.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ADKINS: I would never do nothing to that little girl.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: Shawn Adkins was the last person to see 13- year-old Hailey Dunn alive.

ADKINS: I love her with all my heart.

DUNN: My boyfriend, he came home from work, he seen Hailey, Hailey was there.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: This is where the story takes a tragic turn.

JONES: I think someone`s took her. Because Hailey is -- she`s a home person. I mean it`s either me or her Uncle Roger`s or grandma`s or mom`s or dad`s. She don`t like Shawn being there. But she wants her mom and dad to go back together, too.

ADKINS: I would never do nothing to that little girl. I love her with all my heart. It`s frustrating, you know, what she said about me, but it really doesn`t bother me because, you know, my main focus is just Hailey. We just want her to come home safe.

GRACE: Why are they saying that you and the live-in boyfriend and the family have inconsistent statements? Who has changed their story?

DUNN: I don`t know. I did ask one of the rangers that, because I heard that on the news last night also and he`s supposed to be getting back with me. I asked him if there`s something I needed to clarify or is there something I need to know about.

(END OF VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: We are taking your calls live. I want to go out to Paul Penzone, former sergeant, Phoenix, PD, and child advocate.

Paul, where do we go from here?

PAUL PENZONE, DIRECT OF PREVENTION PROGRAMS, CHILDHELP.ORG, FMR. SERGEANT, PHOENIX PD: Well, I think Bethany hit on something that`s really important. And I give mom credit just like everyone else. But understand this, if there`s anything that she`s not sharing, because she`s ashamed of it, whether it`d be drug use or other issues relative to her boyfriend, she needs to be 110 percent forthright.

Any minor detail that she thinks is more important kept quiet, it`s probably more important being out in the open. So do not hold anything back. And I`m really -- and this is a side note. But I`m so disgusted with what the guest said earlier about attacking this little girl`s character and bringing that issue and that is irrelevant.

What is relevant is this. We need to look at what she was living with, the circumstances that she was dealing with, and anyone who could have been a threat to her. And the other issues about her character at 13 years old are irrelevant. He should be ashamed of himself.

We need to take a look at why this boyfriend was trying to create an alibi for himself, showing up for work and then leaving immediately and that lost time where he claims he`s been in his mother`s home.

GRACE: Yes, you know, Paul Penzone, that behavior alone raises a red flag to me.

PENZONE: It absolutely is. An attempt to create some type of an alibi and his conscience or whatever it was got the best of him. And that`s why I think he was in a panic mode. But this little girl`s safety, if she`s still alive out there, is what`s most important.

That`s the only place our focus should be. And we really need to scrutinize him. Mom needs to be forthright about every single detail in that relationship.

GRACE: To Dr. Howard Oliver, former deputy medical examiner, forensic pathologist, he`s joining us out of L.A.

Dr. Oliver, thank you for being with us. Will forensic evidence degrade over time?

I`m trying to reach Dr. Oliver in L.A.

HOWARD OLIVER, FMR. DEPUTY MEDICAL EXAMINER, FORENSIC PATHOLOGIST: It will degrade over time -- yes, can you hear me?

GRACE: Yes, go ahead.

OLIVER: Yes, the evidence will degrade over time. It depends on exposure to the elements. It depends on where it is. If it`s in a container, where this -- where it`s not exposed to moisture or heat or wind, then it will - it will stay there for quite some time. And these colder conditions, it will -- it will be preserved for quite a long time.

GRACE: I want to go back to Billie Dunn joining us tonight and taking your calls live. She`s joining us out of Colorado City, Texas.

It`s my understanding that your live-in is no longer cooperating with police. Why do you believe that?

DUNN: It`s just -- it`s a scary thought and a bad thought for me, but he`s not. There`s a reason he`s not. He has -- he does have inconsistencies. Why would he come to Colorado City before he goes to his mom`s house? Why just go to work and turn around and walk out?

GRACE: How old is he? Was he born in `85? Is he -- how old is he?

DUNN: Yes, he`s 25, 26.

GRACE: And how old are you?

DUNN: Thirty-three.

GRACE: You keep -- you`ve told me now that he`s not cooperating with police, and I ask you why you say that. I`m not asking why is he not cooperating, I`m saying, why you say that. Is he not calling police? Is he not going down to the station like he`s been asked to?

DUNN: Right. He`s not -- yes, he hasn`t been down there. He hasn`t been talking to any investigators or police or anybody.

GRACE: When we were told that -- when police wanted to look at his cell phone, he started deleting numbers, did he explain that to you?

DUNN: What he told me was, they wanted to see where he had called me at work. He showed it to them on his phone. They said, OK, gave it back to him, and they said show me again. And he says it wasn`t there.

GRACE: To Connie Jones --

DUNN: They didn`t tell me he deleted it, so.

GRACE: This is -- this is Hailey`s grandmother.

Miss Jones, it`s my understanding, from what I`ve read, from what I`ve heard, what I`ve been told, that you did not like -- you didn`t care for this boyfriend at the get-go. Why?

JONES: He`s suggesting that I had -- I don`t know. It`s just a feeling that I had. It doesn`t have anything to do with Clint or Billie, it`s -- I don`t know. It`s just a feeling. He didn`t look right to me.

GRACE: In what way, how did he behave?

JONES: He didn`t behave in any unusual way or anything, he`s just that -- I don`t know, I don`t -- it`s just a feeling that I have.

GRACE: Out to the lines. To Molly in Pennsylvania, hi, Molly.

MOLLY, CALLER FROM PENNSYLVANIA: Hi, Nancy. I just have to say you`re such a phenomenal advocate for victims and that`s what keeps us watching every night. I just have a couple of -- one question and a comment.

When Hailey`s mom said that her boyfriend had failed the polygraph test, and that she was told that before she went in, I kind of feel like maybe she was told that on purpose so that they might have known she would spill the beans on something.

And I also don`t understand why the accusations were made that this cheerleader and a straight A student could be a runaway. I`m wondering who planted that seed into the police officers` minds, if it was the boyfriend with their trouble going on.

GRACE: Good question.

Billie Dunn, have you heard the live-in Shawn Adkins talking about her being just a runaway? I mean, he did tell police how you can find her over there in Scurry County.

DUNN: Right. But from the get-go, I told them the first night I didn`t believe she would ever run away. I never gave Shawn a chance to say otherwise.

GRACE: Has she ever run away? Has she ever stayed away without telling you where she was?

DUNN: No, no.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DUNN: There definitely was no party. We`re not concerned with that at all. Didn`t even realize it was New Year`s Eve. I know I didn`t. Nobody was worried about that. We`re all worried about Hailey.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DUNN: We failed the test.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: He was the last person to see Hailey alive.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: Still no sign. Combing the fields. And retracing foot steps.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There are so many hundreds of miles to cover.

DUNN: Just a 13-year-old baby, and I want her back.

(END OF VIDEO CLIP)

GRACE: We are taking your calls live. I want to go back to Dr. Bethany Marshall.

Bethany, weigh in again, because I cut you off to go to Billie Dunn last time.

MARSHALL: Well, I think there are so many details that are missing. She is not sharing her theories about what happened between Shawn and the child. How did he talk about this child? Did he talk about her like she was a bad little girl or promiscuous like he said to the police or was he fond and adoring of her?

Did he make accusations against her? Was he jealous of her time and attention with the mother or the mother`s time and attention to him? What was the deal with illicit drugs? Was she going along with him or was he going along with her? Who was the ringleader in this situation? And finally, was there a place far away that he romanticized that could be a possible dump site for a body?

Did he like to go camping? Was there a place he was frequenting lately? Because people who commit child homicide always -- often confess in advance as to where they`re going to place the body.

GRACE: To Billie Dunn. Billie, at first she tells cops she is a great little girl, then says she is promiscuous. Why would he say something like that?

DUNN: Right.

GRACE: How did he speak about her to you?

DUNN: Well, how dare him say that in the first place, but he told me, I`ve done a wonderful job with my kids.

GRACE: Well, everyone, a lot of you have asked this question. When the brother got home. I`ve learned that he left the home at 9:00 the night before and didn`t get home until 4:00 p.m. the day Hailey went missing.
