SHOWBIZ TONIGHT

Showbiz Tonight for June 30, 2005, CNNHN

Aired June 30, 2005 - 19:00   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KARYN BRYANT, CO-HOST: I`m Karyn Bryant.
A.J. HAMMER, CO-HOST: And I`m A.J. Hammer. TV`s only live entertainment news show starts right now.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

HAMMER (voice-over): Tonight on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT: Ben and Jen tie the knot! That`s right. They got married. We have all the details of where and how.

Plus, it`s official: she`s pregnant!

BRYANT: A stunning decision that could change the way journalists do their jobs. And it sends shockwaves through the news world. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT with the story and what it could all mean.

HAMMER: Jennifer Tilly: Oscar-nominated actress, movie star, poker champion? She knew when to hold `em, and now she`s made history at the poker table. Jennifer Tilly comes to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT to tell us how she did it. Tonight, live.

JENNIFER TILLY, ACTRESS: Hi, I`m Jennifer Tilly, and if it happened today, it`s on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. You can count on that.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

BRYANT: Hello, I`m Karyn Bryant.

HAMMER: I`m A.J. Hammer.

BRYANT: Tonight, Hollywood`s best kept secret is out. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have said "I do."

HAMMER: You know, this was so top secret, so under the radar, the writers on her show "Alias" would have been proud.

BRYANT: And the daredevils are not only married; there`s another big sort of secret that we can`t wait to tell you about.

HAMMER: Sort of. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT`s Brooke Anderson has been all over this story today, and she joins us live from Hollywood with the very latest -- Brooke.

BROOKE ANDERSON, CNN CORRESPONDENT: A.J. and Karyn, we learned today that the hush-hush wedding happened at the plush Parrot Cay resort in the British West Indies.

Of course, both camps are remaining tight-lipped with details of the ceremony, but SHOWBIZ TONIGHT was able to learn some tidbits and a wedding is not the only big news from Ben and Jen.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

ANDERSON (voice-over): Yes, you can now call them husband and wife! SHOWBIZ TONIGHT has the 411 on the island nuptials. Here`s what we know about the couple dubbed "Bennifer 2."

They got hitched yesterday at the Parrot Cay resort in the islands of Turks and Caicos in the British West Indies. It was clear and sunny, with temperatures reaching the mid-80s.

This exclusive resort, Parrot Cay, is considered a hot spot for many celebrities, where villas can set you back a cool $1,500 a night. Where is it? It`s nestled between the Bahamas and the Dominican Republic, just 575 miles southeast of Miami.

This is the second time 33-year-old Garner has walked down the aisle. She married actor Scott Foley after they met on the set of "Felicity," but that marriage ended in divorce in 2003.

This is Affleck`s first marriage. The 32-year-old and his former flame Jennifer Lopez called off their highly publicized September 2003 wedding and later ended their overexposed engagement in January 2004.

Garner and Affleck have reportedly been dating since last year. They co-starred together in the 2003 movie "Daredevil" but actually met while filming "Pearl Harbor" back in 2001.

But wait, there`s more!

REGIS PHILBIN, CO-HOST, "LIVE WITH REGIS AND KELLY": Now, I understand that your star there is pregnant.

RON RIFKIN, ACTOR: She is going to have a child. Yes.

ANDERSON: That was Garner`s "Alias" co-star Ron Rifkin spilling the beans on "Regis and Kelly" this morning. The couple`s publicists also confirmed, for the first time, that Garner is, indeed, pregnant with their first child. For months, both Affleck and Garner wouldn`t answer questions about a noticeable bump.

PHILBIN: Her condition is going to be worked into the plotline of "Alias."

RIFKIN: So I hear. I`m not allowed to tell you, but so I hear, yes.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

ANDERSON: Garner and Affleck will be busy with baby and with their careers, joining the growing list of celebrities juggling both these days.

Garner has recently been filming the drama "Catch and Release" in Vancouver. And the fifth season of her TV series "Alias" begins airing this fall. No release date has been set just yet for Affleck`s next film, "Man About Town" -- A.J.

HAMMER: Cat`s out of the bag. Thanks very much, Brooke Anderson live in Hollywood.

Now stay tuned, because later on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, we`re going to have the latest exclusive details of the wedding of the week and the ways Ben and Jennifer kept it top secret. It was something right out of a Jack Ryan movie.

Well, tonight, there`s another big wedding to tell you about. "American Idol" runner-up Bo Bice is no longer a bachelor. That`s right. Bice`s record company confirmed today that he married girlfriend Caroline Fisher in their hometown of Alabama. The couple met at a cafe where Fisher worked.

Now Bice may be married, but his single life is still going well, so to speak. His single debuted today at No. 1 on billboard`s hot singles chart.

BRYANT: Tonight, a dramatic face-off is over, and it could affect the news you watch and read. One of America`s biggest and best-known magazines blinked today in a showdown over giving up its sources, backing down with its back to the wall.

Now SHOWBIZ TONIGHT`s David Haffenreffer is working on that story. He`s here with us live right now.

David, what is going on?

DAVID HAFFENREFFER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Karyn, today, "TIME" magazine agreed to give a federal grand jury the notes of a reporter threatened with jail over a federal investigation. A judge had threatened the magazine with a $1,000 a day fine.

We should say that "TIME" and this channel are both owned by Time Warner. This epic showdown could have a dramatic effect on the news you get. Or will it?

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BILL PLANTE, CBS NEWS CORRESPONDENT: Anybody who`s going to be scared by this shouldn`t be a reporter.

HAFFENREFFER (voice-over): CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante is one of the many journalists reacting to "TIME" magazine`s decision to turn over information about a confidential source. It`s believed to be one of the few times in recent memory that a major news organization has done that, and it could affect how journalists on TV and in print bring you the news.

NORM PEARLSTINE, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF, "TIME" MAGAZINE: I think it will definitely have a chilling effect on our ability to do our job.

PLANTE: Secret sources are a big part of journalism. We all know about the Watergate source, Deep Throat, depicted in the movie "All the President`s Men."

HAL HOLBROOK, ACTOR: The cover-up had little to do with Watergate. It was mainly to protect the covert operations.

HAFFENREFFER: And journalists often risk jail to protect a secret source`s identity, a dramatic constitutional battle you may have seen played out on TV.

ED ASNER, ACTOR: We`re going to get you out. We`re going to fight this thing and we`re going to win it.

HAFFENREFFER: In the 1970s on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," TV journalist Mary Richards once went to jail for not revealing a source.

So did 1990s fictional newswoman Murphy Brown.

But rather than a sitcom, this real life drama plays out like a four- part miniseries. Part one, 2003, former diplomat Joe Wilson criticizes President Bush`s Iraq policy in a "New York Times" opinion piece.

Part two, days later, columnist and CNN contributor Robert Novak outs Wilson`s wife as a secret CIA operative, so the feds try to find out who gave Novak the name.

Part three, the feds find "TIME`s" Matthew Cooper and Judith Miller of the "New York Times", who both reported this story. They both refuse a court order to give up their sources and both are threatened with jail.

JUDITH MILLER, REPORTER, "NEW YORK TIMES": I think if -- I think I didn`t think at this point that a pledge of confidentiality that I gave to a source would endanger my freedom.

HAFFENREFFER: Part four, this week, the Supreme Court kills their last hope of staying out of jail, which leads us to today, when "TIME" finally says it will hand over Cooper`s notes.

PEARLSTINE: I don`t make the laws. I just have to follow them like every other citizen.

HAFFENREFFER: So who is not facing jail time? The guy who outed the agent in the first place. CNN`s Ed Henry pressed Robert Novak on the matter yesterday.

ED HENRY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Do you understand why, in general, there`s frustration among fellow journalists that, after 41 years of distinguished work, where you`ve always pushed and been a fierce advocate of the public right to know, you`re not letting the public know about such a critical case. And two people may go to jail.

ROBERT NOVAK, SYNDICATED COLUMNIST: They`re not going to jail because of me. Whether I -- whether I answer your questions or not, it has nothing to do with them. That`s ridiculous to think that I am the cause of their going to jail. I don`t think they should be going to jail, though.

HAFFENREFFER: Still, even with all this talk of U.S. Supreme Court decisions, the CIA, and prison, CBS`s Plante doesn`t think what happened today will scare journalists.

PLANTE: I don`t think anyone who`s in pursuit of a good story will still be willing to tell a source that they`ll guarantee anonymity, even if it means going to jail, because in the end it`s still about getting information out.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

HAFFENREFFER: And yet, there is so much more to this story. Today, the "New York Times" said it was deeply disappointed in "TIME" magazine`s decision and that it will support its reporter, Judith Miller. She has said that she will go to prison rather than testify for the grand jury.

Cooper is still saying the same thing, despite what his bosses at "TIME" did today.

So, is jail in their future? We may find out at a court hearing next week -- Karyn.

BRYANT: Thanks very much, David Haffenreffer.

That does lead us to our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT question of the day. News reporters: should they ever have to give up their sources? You can vote at CNN.com/ShowbizTonight. You can also send e-mails to us at ShowbizTonight@CNN.com. We`ll read some of your thoughts later on in the show.

HAMMER: Well, Michael Jackson is out of the country tonight, his first trip overseas since he was acquitted of child molestation charges. Jackson and his kids are on a vacation in Bahrain after being invited by the royal family there. Jackson`s brother Jermaine is a friend of a Bahraini prince.

Jackson arrived in the small Gulf kingdom last night on a private jet. An official close to the royal family says Jackson is staying there indefinitely to relax.

BRYANT: How did "War of the Worlds" do in its first day invading theaters? Did it live up the hype? Well, the first numbers are just in, and we`ve got them. We`ll have that for you, coming up.

HAMMER: Plus, we`re going to find out why Jennifer Tilly`s new bracelet is the envy of hundreds of women in Las Vegas. Jennifer Tilly is coming up live in the "Showbiz Sitdown."

BRYANT: Also, our special report, "The Hollywood Baby Boom." Valerie Harper and her daughter are live on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT to reveal their very special bond and how it can help other women trying to become a mother.

HAMMER: Time now for tonight`s "Entertainment Weekly Great American Pop Culture Quiz." On which show have both Ben Stiller and his wife Christine Taylor guest-starred? A, "Spin City"; B, "Murphy Brown"; C, "NewsRadio"; or D, "Friends"? We`ll be right back with the answer.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. Once again, tonight`s "Entertainment Weekly Great American Pop Culture Quiz." On which show have both Ben Stiller and his wife Christine Taylor guest-starred? "Spin City," "Murphy Brown," "NewsRadio" or "Friends"? The answer is D, "Friends."

BRYANT: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. I`m Karyn Bryant.

And tonight, we can be the first to tell you that Tom Cruise`s "War of the Worlds" is not just about big hype. It is about big money. The box office numbers, just out today, show the film raked in $34.6 million in its debut around the world yesterday.

That does include $21.3 million in North America, $13.35 million from 46 countries added into that. That debut is a record for Paramount, the studio that made the movie.

HAMMER: It`s time now for a "Showbiz Sitdown" with Jennifer Tilly. The Oscar-nominated actress has a brand-new title: poker champion. That`s right. Tilly has just made history. She`s the very first celebrity to win an event at the World Series of Poker.

This is not a celebrity event. She was just one of the players. She beat out 600 players in the Ladies` No-limit Texas Hold `em. She won $158,000 and the championship bracelet.

Jennifer Tilly joins us now live from Hollywood.

Thanks for coming on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, Jenny. We`ve got to see the bracelet. You got it?

TILLY: I have it here. It`s too big for me. I have to take some links off.

HAMMER: Not a couple of them, though.

TILLY: It`s pretty exciting. You can see, it has diamonds on it. And you know, I`ve always been a big fan of the bling.

HAMMER: And it goes well with the tank top you`ve got on there, so you have to get that fixed.

TILLY: Yes, well, I bought this when I first arrived in Las Vegas. I was so excited, like, "Oh, my God. I`m finally here at the World Series of Poker." And I bought this T-shirt, and my boyfriend is like, "You are not wearing that T-shirt anywhere around the poker room," because it`s, like, a total tourist thing. So I thought this would be a great place to wear it on TV.

HAMMER: Right. You can wear it every single day. Now the whole nation gets to see you in the shirt.

TILLY: Yes.

HAMMER: I`m a big fan of Texas Hold `em. I`ve only played it a couple of times. It`s a difficult game. How did you get so good?

TILLY: Well, it`s really complicated. I`ve been playing poker for a long time. I have a regular group that plays poker for about 15 years. But we play those games with 20 gazillion wild cards and, you know, where you stick the card on your forehead and everybody points and laughs.

But Texas Hold `em, I used -- my dad bought me a computer program called the Binion`s World Series of Poker. And that`s what you play on the Binion`s World Series of Poker computer program. And about a year and a half ago, the Hollywood Home Game, the world poker tour asked me to do the Hollywood Home Game. And the only time I played Texas Hold `em was on the computer, so I sort of knew how it was. But I was hooked after that.

My boyfriend is a professional poker player, Phil "The Unabomber" Laak. And I met him at a celebrity invitational. And when you`re dating a professional poker player, you actually have to learn the lingo and get good because he lives, breathes, and eats poker. He talks poker 24 hours a day.

HAMMER: Right.

TILLY: Like, he`ll wake up in the morning and he`ll go, "Oh, my God, honey, it was so beautiful: double, gut shot, inside straight."

And I`ll be like, "OK, honey."

HAMMER: Now we should point out that your boyfriend, actually, won in the men`s division. But well, he came in No. 2, and you came in No. 1. So almost a little bit of a rivalry there, right?

TILLY: It was -- well, it was really strange because I almost didn`t enter the ladies event, because my boyfriend was going to make the final table. And ever since I`d met him, I wanted him to make the final table, because I wanted to stand in the audience like Glenn Close in "The Natural" and root him on.

HAMMER: Right.

TILLY: And he was like, "No, honey, you should really enter that, because it will be -- you know, it will be a lot of fun for you." And it turned out we were both at final tables at the same time. And every time he had a break he`d run over and watch me to see how I was going, and when I had a break I would run across the room to watch him. Lucky it was both taking place in the same room.

And he came in second. Johnny Chan won his tenth bracelet. But in all the reports they said that Phil was very entertaining.

HAMMER: Good, good. Well, we`re really thrilled for you. Congratulations again.

TILLY: Thank you.

HAMMER: Hold up that bracelet one more time. Have a great Fourth of July weekend.

TILLY: Thank you very much.

HAMMER: And thank you, Jennifer Tilly, joining us live from Hollywood -- Karyn.

BRYANT: Tonight, we wrap up our special SHOWBIZ TONIGHT series, "The Hollywood Baby Boom." Celebrity moms and adoption. This is our focus tonight, and it is not unusual in Hollywood.

Angelina Jolie and former husband Billy Bob Thornton adopted 7 1/2- month-old Maddox from Cambodia before they split up. Sharon Stone adopted a newborn baby boy from Texas before she split up with her husband, Phil Bronstein. And Rosie O`Donnell and her partner Kelli Carpenter have adopted three of their four children.

Now another celebrity mom who has adopted is Valerie Harper. Now you may best know her as Rhoda Morgenstern. Love her on that "Mary Tyler Moore Show." And she also was the star of her own sitcom, "Valerie."

She and her daughter, Cristina Caccioti, join us now live from Hollywood. Thank you for joining us, ladies. And I want to get right to it. Valerie, did the fact that you were in the limelight help or hurt your chances when you were thinking of adopting?

VALERIE HARPER, ACTRESS: I guess you could say both. Every adoptive parent has things they have to move through and with us, we had a court case going on that we won, very extravagantly, but that we were being looked at for, at the home study they do, before they release a child.

And at the same time, we got wonderful Duran Cook, our attorney, and so I think it could be -- it`s either way. You just move through it, and it`s worth it to you because you want the kid.

BRYANT: Right, and Cristina, you were 4 years old, nearly 4 years old when you were adopted. Can you tell us what that was like? Do you have memories or is it still sort of blurry?

CRISTINA CACCIOTI, VALERIE HARPER`S DAUGHTER: Oh, my God, yes. Actually, I remember coming off the airplane, and when I got to the car where Valerie and Tony, my parents, were waiting for me, I jumped right into my dad`s lap and said, "Daddy!" and jumped right into Mom`s lap right after and gave her a big kiss on the cheek and said, "Mom, yay!"

HARPER: She did. She literally adopted us.

BRYANT: That`s wonderful.

HARPER: She did. She adopted us. Because at 4 you have quite a consciousness, and it`s been great.

BRYANT: Well, you hear adoptive parents and the children talk often about the situation, when it finally comes up. The child maybe asks, "Mommy, am I adopted?" Or the parents feel that it`s time to divulge that.

Now since she was already 4, obviously, you didn`t have to do that, but was there ever the big conversation about adoption and what it meant?

HARPER: Sure, but she kind of knew. As I said, she adopted us. And the truth about adoption is it is your child. It gets to be that, and I could only be happy that I had never carried a child full term, because if I had, yes, I`d have that child but I never would have had Cristina. So it`s like a blessing.

And I just think that there`s all kinds of families in America and around the world, and we need to treasure them all.

BRYANT: Absolutely. And Cristina, did you think at one point, "Sweet! I scored the celebrity mom"? You know what I mean? Besides being -- being a celebrity daughter now, how has being adopted impacted your life? Because I know you`re also an actress, as well.

CACCIOTI: Right. It`s just the greatest experience, because I knew right off the bat that I was special, because I was chosen. So I mean, we kind of chose one another. Because if I didn`t like her, they would have taken me away.

HARPER: I know! It`s funny. I met Shirley MacLaine a couple of days after Cristina was with us. And I had her on my hip, and I was buying wedding rings. We had a triple ring ceremony is what happened, because she was old enough to be in the wedding ceremony.

And there Shirley says, "Who is this?"

I said, "It`s my daughter of two days."

And she said, "Mommy, Mommy, let`s go."

I said, "Shirley, she`s calling me Mom already."

She said, "Valerie, stop it. Stop it. It`s a miracle. You`re a mom; she`s your daughter. She found you in the universe, accept it."

What better person to meet than Shirley MacLaine on this level of spiritual, mystical reality.

BRYANT: Absolutely, if ever there`s somebody who knows about the flow of the universe, it is Miss MacLaine. I love it.

HARPER: Yes, exactly.

BRYANT: Why do you think adoption is so popular in Hollywood? Because it seems to be a growing trend.

HARPER: I don`t think it`s Hollywood. I think it`s across the country. I think it`s the stigma of adoption from when I was a kid -- since open adoption came in, I think there`s been a whole different experience and embracing of the adoption. So that you can have a family, that kids that need homes. There`s a lot of kids that need homes that are older children that, you know, are wonderful to be adopted.

Cristina wasn`t going to go into acting until recently. But it`s very prideful of me for her to be, you know, studying with Groundlings and having gone to Shakespeare.

BRYANT: I do want to mention that Valerie, of course, you are starring in a one-woman play. It`s called "Golda`s Balcony." It`s about the life of the prime minister of Israel. The national tour is kicking off in October.

HARPER: That`s right.

BRYANT: We do wish you the best of luck with that.

HARPER: Thank you.

BRYANT: You and Cristina Caccioti, thank you so much for joining us here on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

HARPER: Thank you.

CACCIOTI: Thank you.

HAMMER: Well, the Hollywood baby boom continues. Ben, Jen and baby on the way. Coming up, what you may not have known about the story today that Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have gotten married.

BRYANT: Plus, Live 8 is coming up this weekend. But who is organizer Bob Geldof most excited to see perform? He tells SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, and you`re probably going to be pretty excited, too.

HAMMER: And is America ready for gay TV? There`s a new network hitting the air, and there`s more to come. "Showbiz In-Depth" on the way.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

BRYANT: Simultaneous concerts taking place around the world: in Paris, Berlin, Philly, Tokyo, Moscow and more, all filled with the biggest names in the music biz. Of course, I`m talking about Live 8.

It happens this Saturday, and today organizer and U2 front man Bono told CNN that there will be some big surprises, including a performance by U2 with Paul McCartney. They`re going to perform "Sergeant Pepper`s Lonely Hearts Club Band." And Bono tells us -- told us that it will be the first time McCartney has performed the song with a band since he recorded it.

It is music history in the making. And show organizer Bob Geldof told me this afternoon that there`s a lot more to look forward to.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BOB GELDOF, LIVE 8 ORGANIZER: I`m interested in, you know, the newer guys like The Killers, and the ColdPlays and the Snow Patrols. I`m interested in those guys. I`m interested in Jay-Z and, you know, Destiny`s Child and Ludacris and people like that. They interest me.

But hey, the Pink Floyd for the first time in 25 years?

BRYANT: That`s huge.

GELDOF: A gazillion albums.

BRYANT: Right.

GELDOF: This is it. This is the first and last time you will ever see those guys, the original guys, saying thanks for everything, and good- bye to the world. You know, trying to put that together was a lot more difficult than trying to get a debt trade and aid package out of George Bush, believe me.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BRYANT: Geldof says the whole point behind Live 8 is to get enough people out in the streets across the world to show the world`s eight most powerful leaders -- including, of course, George Bush -- that they mean business at the upcoming G-8 summit. They aim to double aid to Africa and drop their debt for good.

Geldof`s first plight to help Africa was in 1985 with Live Aid. Def Leppard couldn`t make the concert back then, but front man Joe Elliot told SHOWBIZ TONIGHT he wouldn`t miss this one for the world.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

JOE ELLIOTT, MUSICIAN: We were afforded the opportunity to do it 20 years later. We weren`t going to say no to people like Bono and Geldof, who are doing the right thing.

And what we`re talking about here is not so much politics. It`s just mindless starvation. People will argue the point that he`s going to really help, and other people say he`s not going to do anything, because the last one didn`t really stop anything.

But if you don`t keep buying a ticket, you`ve got no chance of winning the lottery.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BRYANT: The G-8 leaders meet starting next Wednesday in Scotland.

HAMMER: Well, if you can`t make it to Live 8 this weekend, you can still get in the action online. We`re going to tell you how, coming up in "The Showbiz Guide."

BRYANT: Plus, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have tied the knot. More details about their wedding are coming up next.

HAMMER: Plus, we`re going to tell you the little trick Jennifer Love- Hewitt uses to stop herself from cursing a blue streak. That`s coming up in "Thursday InStyle" on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

SOPHIA CHOI, CNN HEADLINE NEWS ANCHOR: Hello. I`m Sophia Choi. And here is your "Headline Prime Newsbreak."

NASA is planning a July 13th launch of Space Shuttle Discovery. It will be the first shuttle launch since the Columbia disaster in 2003. Seven astronauts will bring replacement parts and supplies to the International Space Station. This week, a safety panel found NASA has not fully complied with all of its recommendations, but NASA says risks have been reduced to an acceptable level.

Well, did the new president-elect of Iran take part in the U.S. Embassy hostage crisis 25 years ago in Tehran? Some former hostages claim he did. But others say they don`t remember him from the 444-day standoff. President Bush says the allegations raise a host of questions about Iran`s new leader.

And interest rates are heading up again. The Federal Reserve Board is raising key short-term interest rate a quarter of a percentage points to 3.25 percent. The Fed says it will probably continue raising rates as a, quote, "measured pace."

That`s the news for now. I`m Sophia Choi. Now back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

BRYANT: Tonight, a new alias for Jen Garner. You can call her Mrs. Ben Affleck. All of the latest details of her secret wedding. Oh, and she`s pregnant, too.

HAMMER: Oh. And TV history about to be made in just a few minutes. Don`t touch that dial. We`ll tell you what`s happening tonight on the tube.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

PAMELA ANDERSON, ACTRESS: Hi, I`m Pamela Anderson. And if it happened today, it`s on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HAMMER: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT, TV`s only live entertainment news show. It`s 31 minutes past the hour. I`m A.J. Hammer.

BRYANT: I`m Karyn Bryant. Here are tonight`s "Hot Headlines."

HAMMER: "Time`s" turning it over. In a decision that could change the way reporters do their jobs, "Time" magazine, which is part of Time- Warner, like us, said today it will turn over subpoenaed records from journalists Matt Cooper regarding the leak of a CIA operative`s name. Cooper could have faced jail time. It`s not clear if "Time`s" move will keep him out of the slammer.

BRYANT: And that leads to our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT question of the day. News reporters: Should they ever have to give up their sources? You can keep voting at CNN.com/showbiztonight. You can also write to us at showbiztonight@CNN.com. Your e-mails are coming up at 54 past the hour.

HAMMER: Also tonight, a beach, baby and a bride. Everyone today is talking about Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner`s secret Caribbean wedding yesterday. SHOWBIZ TONIGHT also confirmed that the "Alias" star is pregnant.

BRYANT: Well, we have got all of the up-to-the minute details on the wedding and the pregnancy. Joining to us to fill us live here in New York, Lola Ogunnaike from the "New York Times," and live from Hollywood, Mike Fleeman from "People" magazine.

Lola, I want to start with you. How long have they been planning this wedding?

LOLA OGUNNAIKE, THE "NEW YORK TIMES": You know, it`s unclear how long it`s been happening. They`ve been dating for, you know, a long period of time, but they`ve been very private about this relationship, which is wildly different from the way Ben Affleck handled his relationship with Jennifer Lopez. I mean, he literally kissed her butt in the video for, you know, "Jenny from the Block."

BRYANT: I think he learned something about humility and keeping it quiet there.

OGUNNAIKE: I think he decided that he wanted this relationship to be very low-key, very private, very between the two of them, and he didn`t want it to be the big media spectacle that the first Bennifer was.

BRYANT: Right.

And, Mike, you agree on the keeping it secret part? How did this happen? How could we have not known?

MIKE FLEEMAN, "PEOPLE" MAGAZINE: Well, we had indications that it was going to be happening. It was just a question of when. But they went to one of the most private, exclusive islands in the world, got away from everything.

BRYANT: Turks and Caicos.

FLEEMAN: And they snuck in.

BRYANT: Right, Turks and Caicos. What can you tell us about the resort in which they were married, Mike?

FLEEMAN: Well, this is a favorite of celebrities. Lindsay Lohan was just recently there. Bruce Willis goes there all the time. Matthew McConaughey goes there when he tries to get away. Bungalows cost $3,000 a night, but more than that, it`s almost impossible to get the paparazzi there. And this is the best place in the world to get married if you don`t want any attention.

BRYANT: Lola, who was on the guest list?

OGUNNAIKE: You know, I have no idea who was on the guest list. I`ve reached out to Ben Affleck`s publicist. No one is talking. They are keeping mum.

I`m assuming that Matt Damon was there. Matt Damon is a fan of the Parrot Key Island, as well, where the marriage supposedly took place. So it`s safe to assume that he was there. But who was there? I heard, you know, some members of the "Alias" cast. Jennifer Garner is the star of "Alias." But other than that, they`ve been quite mum about it.

BRYANT: Any details on who may have made her dress or anything like that?

OGUNNAIKE: No. We know Carolina Herrera made Renee Zellwegger`s dress. We know that Vera Wang is a favorite among celebrities, as well as Monique Lhuillier, so those are the three suspects that we could go to. But again, we don`t really know all these details.

BRYANT: Now, Mike, on "Regis and Kelly" this morning, Ron Rifkin finally actually said, "Yes, Jennifer is pregnant." This has been one of those secrets that`s been kept for awhile. What`s with the timing of this finally now coming to light?

FLEEMAN: Yes. Well, we had reported about three weeks ago, but it looks like the baby is going to be due in the fall, in the late fall. And they`re both very excited about it. And you know, I think the big question was, were they going to get married before the baby or after the baby? And they decided to do it before.

BRYANT: Very nice.

OGUNNAIKE: And let`s face it, Karyn. At some point, you can`t keep that a secret. That is one of the secrets that you can`t keep. It`s going to show. And I think now they have gotten to a point where she is visibly pregnant. In the first trimester, maybe she was able to hide it underneath, you know, sweatshirts and things of that nature, but now I just think it`s too big of a bump to hide.

BRYANT: And the thing is, Lola, what`s so unusual is that they don`t have anything to promote.

OGUNNAIKE: I know, isn`t that shocking? You have got Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, you know, flying around town. You`ve got Tom Cruise jumping on couches to...

(CROSSTALK)

OGUNNAIKE: ... in conjunction with "War of Worlds."

BRYANT: And loving getting married on the...

(CROSSTALK)

OGUNNAIKE: That`s what`s so revolutionary about this whole thing.

BRYANT: Unbelievable. Well, Lola Ogunnaike from the "Times," thank you very much. And Mike Fleeman from "People" magazine, thanks for joining us to give us a little bit of levity here tonight -- A.J.?

HAMMER: All right, Carolyn -- Karyn -- did I just call you Carolyn? I`ve been thinking Lola Karen (ph).

Anyway, let`s just move on to the "Showbiz Guide" now. This is where we help you decide where to best spend your dollars on movies, music, DVDs, and more. And tonight, it`s your guide to new music online.

Joining us here live in New York to tell us what`s hot on the `net right now, Jonathan Cohen of Billboard.com.

Jonathan, of course, the biggest musical event of the moment is the Live 8 Concert happening on Saturday. When the Live Aid event happened 20 years ago, the Internet barely a twinkle in Al Gore`s eye, but of course, people are going to be able to see this event online this weekend. Tell them how.

JONATHAN COHEN, BILLBOARD.COM: That`s right. AOL Music is going to be the place to be. They`re broadcasting six of the ten shows. And also you can look at these shows online for six weeks after the fact on-demand.

Some of the biggest stars in music are going to be at this, Pink Floyd, reuniting for the first time in 21 years with its key members, U2, Stevie Wonder. It`s really going to be an amazing event, and AOL has the exclusive. That`s the place to see it.

HAMMER: And you don`t have to be an AOL subscriber, from what I understand?

COHEN: That`s correct. It`s free and open to everybody.

HAMMER: OK. And it is incumbent on me to point out AOL, part of the Time-Warner family, as are we.

Let`s talk about the Nine Inch Nails Web site. They`ve got something pretty cool going on over there.

COHEN: They sure do. A few months ago, they posted actually a digital file with all of the instrument tracks from their new single, "The Hand That Feeds," for fans to go ahead and download and actually manipulate in anyway that they wish.

And they`ve done it again with their new single "Only." They`re actually saying that, based on the tremendous response for this, they may wind up releasing some of these or they may wind up giving some of them like an official band seal of approval. But it`s a really cool way to sort of get up close and personal with your favorite band`s music.

HAMMER: That`s really, really cool. Peter Gabriel, actually, on the forefront of that some years ago.

The Foo Fighters also have a great concert event archived on their Web site. Why don`t you tell us about that event?

COHEN: That`s right. They just recently played a show at Roswell Air Force Base, which was the, you know, site in the `40s of a supposed UFO crash. That was exclusive show just for contest winners. But now you can go online and watch the whole thing, in case you weren`t one of the select few that was there to catch it live.

HAMMER: And there`s an important connection to point out between Roswell and the Foo Fighters. Do you want to make that comparison?

COHEN: Well, their label is called Roswell Records. And Foo Fighters, I guess, was a name, you know, in the Air Force World War II days for UFOs or, you know, pilots that would all of a sudden maybe have to fight a UFO. That`s why they`re called Foo Fighters. So that kind of thing is very woven through their name. So it was an appropriate place to do the show.

HAMMER: And real quickly, for people who can`t wait to see Jessica Simpson in the "Dukes of Hazzard" movie, how can they hear her now?

COHEN: You can go to iTunes right now and download her cover of, "These Boots Are Made for Walking." It`s not going to be out on CD until July 19th. And the movie won`t be out until August 5th. But iTunes has it right now.

HAMMER: All right, Jonathan Cohen from Billboard.com, thanks for joining us for the "Showbiz Guide" tonight.

COHEN: Thanks a lot.

BRYANT: So what are you listening to? Well, here are today`s top five downloaded albums from iTunes. Coldplay`s "X&Y" is at the top. They are followed by Jason Mraz`s three-track "Wordplay" of his upcoming CD. Foo Fighters, "In Your Honor," is in third. The White Stripes, "Get Behind Me, Satan," that`s at fourth. And country`s George Strait`s "Somewhere Down in Texas" is number five.

And this week`s top songs from buymusic.yub.com: "We Belong Together," by Mariah Carey is first, followed by Gwen Stefani`s "Holla Back Girl," "Behind These Hazel Eyes" from Kelly Clarkson is in third. Black Eyes Peas "Don`t Funk with my Heart" is fourth. And the Backstreet Boys` "Incomplete" completes the list at number five.

HAMMER: Well, just minutes from now, MTV will try to make TV history again. And just as they shook things up when they launched Music Television two decades ago, they aren`t playing it straight this time, either. We`re going find out what we`re talking about, coming up next.

BRYANT: And what`s old is new. The latest red carpet accessory that`s a celebrity must have. A grand Thursday "In Style," next.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

BRYANT: Welcome back to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. I`m Karyn Bryant.

Well, you got your news TV, your Food TV, and your MTV, and just a short time from now, you are going to have more gay TV, and that is the topic of tonight`s "Showbiz In-depth."

Tonight, MTV Networks launches Logo. It is the first advertiser- supported cable network targeting the gay community. The network is tapping into an estimated potential 15 to 17 million gay viewers. And this year, "Ad Age" magazine says gay Americans have the spending power of more than $600 billion.

So this is very big business indeed. Joining us live from Hollywood to talk about gay TV is Chad Allen. He is the star of "Third Man Out." It`s a TV series airing on subscriber-based Here TV. We also have CEO and founder of Here TV Paul Colichman. And Christopher Lisotta of "TV Week."

We should mentioned that we invited Logo TV to participate with us tonight, but they have declined.

Now, Christopher, I want to start with you. Why is the climate right for a gay TV network?

CHRISTOPHER LISOTTA, HOLLYWOOD, CALIF.: I think there`s a couple reasons why it`s right. I think part of it is there`s availability, in terms of cable. Viacom, which owns Logo, made space on their tier of digital networks to put it out there.

I think, in terms of culture, "Will and Grace," "Queer Eye," all of these shows have laid the groundwork, "Queer as Folk," on all these other networks. It`s something that Viacom has been talking about, in terms of Logo, for a long time. And they felt that now was the time to sort of put it together.

I think there is a critical mass, in terms of audience acceptance, as well as a growing gay and lesbian advertising market, in terms of, you know, the kind of people who are out there who would be interested in this kind of programming. And then, I think, for "Queer Eye," as an example, people feel that there would be a crossover, there will be enough people. Just like men watch Lifetime, straight people could definitely watch Logo and Here.

BRYANT: OK now, Paul, I want to address you on this one. How is Logo going to be different from your channel, Here TV, or even QTV?

PAUL COLICHMAN, CEO, HERE!TV: Well, Logo`s an advertiser-supported network. We`re a pay service. We`re a gay HBO, for lack of a better term. And Logo is going to choose programming that`s appropriate for a basic cable audience.

And I think they`re going to do a really spectacular job at it. Those folks are pros, and they`re doing a classy service, nothing that`s going to upset anyone. It`ll be a great addition to a basic cable lineup.

BRYANT: Would you say, then, it`s fair to say that Logo is a channel that maybe would be preaching to the unconverted, whereas your channel here is already preaching to the converted?

COLICHMAN: That`s certainly a way to look at it. Certainly, as a basic cable channel, they have responsibilities different than I do as a pay cable channel. They need to make sure that the wider audience is, a, not upset by the channel, and more importantly they have this wonderful opportunity to increase the visibility and the respect of the gay community.

So I think it`s a marvelous opportunity. We`re thrilled and delighted, and I congratulate them.

BRYANT: Great.

And Chad, you`ve got a show. And you have worked with the different networks. When you`re thinking of ideas for shows, do you want to target a very specific audience, or do you want to do something like "Will and Grace" has done and reach for a broader audience?

CHAD ALLEN, HOLLYWOOD, CALIF.: You know what? At the end of the day, I`m a storyteller, and I hope to be a good storyteller. And I think good stories appeal to everybody.

The fact of the matter is, I`m also an openly gay actor. I`ve been openly gay for ten years now, something like that. And we`ve been waiting for a long time for this opportunity.

When I came out, they told me, "You`re probably never going to work again. Get used to it," you know?

BRYANT: Wow.

ALLEN: Now I`m working with three different all-gay networks talking about creating stories where we get to show our heroes in our life. I`m so excited about it. It`s a great opportunity, not just for us, but everybody. Showtime, with their "Queer of Folk," found that 40-something housewives were watching it more than gay men, so...

BRYANT: Right. So certainly, they`ve had success with "Queer as Folk" and with "The L Word." But I`m curious, though, is there really that much of a difference if you`re watching, let`s say, a detective show? How is that going to be different if the detective happens to be gay?

ALLEN: I don`t know. We`re going to find out. I think one of the fantastic things that Paul has decided to do with his network is really sort of dedicate it to telling great stories.

You know, for once we`re going to get to tell those classic genres, adventure stories, detective stories, you know, jump in. It`s just going to be fantastic, and those characters happen to be gay. You know, I`m so excited. The show that we`re doing, "Third Man Out," I just watched it again last night. It`s a fantastic show. I actually think my dad`s going to enjoy watching the show.

COLICHMAN: And yet the images are authentically gay and lesbian. We don`t shy away from intimacy. We don`t shy away from relationships. All of our gay and lesbian characters are fully fleshed out, living active, engaged lives. It`s very exciting.

BRYANT: Now, Christopher, speaking of that, if some of these shows do tend to sort of push the envelope, what kind of reaction has the advertising community had to the idea of Logo?

LISOTTA: Well, obviously, for Here TV, it`ll be less of an issue. The real issue is going to be with Logo. They launched a very low-key campaign. I don`t think it`s a surprise that they didn`t come on the air.

I think their focus is going to be focusing on the gay community, particularly like running ads in gay papers, on gay Web sites, and getting an audience, building it up that way, and then slowly rolling out to a broader audience.

They have been very specific about saying that the programming will be very advertiser-friendly. And I don`t think that`s going to be a problem. I thinks some people are wondering, well, is that going to mean watered- down, you know, content?

But if you look at something like "Queer Eye," there`s a perfect example of a show that definitely has a point of view, that definitely has been edge, but has been able to not only keep advertisers but attract new ones, and actually high premium ones. If you look at sort of the way, you know, it looks at redoing your life, redoing your home. I mean, that`s a natural place for advertisers to go. And my guess is that people at Logo will be doing the same thing. I mean, these are very smart people doing a very smart network.

BRYANT: OK, well, thank you very much. Guys, I`m sorry, we have got to wrap it up. But the channel starts in just a little while. So I want to thank you now, and people can check it out for themselves. Chad Allen, Paul Colichman, and Christopher Lisotta, thank you. And Logo TV, by MTV, launches tonight on select cable carriers across the country.

HAMMER: Time now to get into Thursday "In Style." Tonight, meet the grandparents. From career advice to special moments, celebrities tell us why those in their golden years are so golden to them.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: The relationship that we have with our grandparents is really different from the relationship that we have with our parents. Grandparents are so special to celebrities that a lot of celebrities have decided to name their companies after their grandparents, inspiration and memories.

Kirsten Dunst`s grandmother`s relationship was so special to her that she named her production company after her. Wooden Spoon Productions, because Kirsten`s grandmother would discipline them, threatening to hit them with a wooden spoon.

Jennifer Love-Hewitt, she has a funny story. Her grandmother hated for her to use foul language. So to this day, whenever Jennifer feels like she wants to bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep, bleep, she calls her grandmother, who taught her not to use foul language. And her grandmother will say all of the things she wanted to say on the telephone.

Liv Tyler`s grandmother impacted her in that she taught her etiquette. Her grandmother actually runs an etiquette school. And whenever she`s in a tough situation, she always reflects back to the lessons of her grandmother.

Great music of John Legend, and so inspired by his grandmother and his life in the church with his grandmother. She plays the organ in the church, and she inspired him to play the piano.

What makes George Clooney`s grandmother so golden in his eyes is the fact that she stayed close to home. And when he bought his beautiful villa on Lake Como, he decided to take her on vacation with him.

Grandparents are the new kind of red carpet accessory. Natalie Portman`s relationship with her grandmother, being a kind of night owl when she was growing up, she has decided to go to benefits, some parties with her grandmother. Her grandmother apparently likes to hang out late. I find that really cool, that a grandmother likes to hang out until 5:00 a.m.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

HAMMER: For more about celebrities and their special grandparents, you can pick up a copy of July`s "In Style" magazine. It`s on newsstands now.

BRYANT: It is time to get your laugh on in "Laughter Dark." As we do every night, we bring you the late-night laughs you may have missed. Here are a couple highlights from last night`s "Late Show with David Letterman."

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

DAVID LETTERMAN, HOST, "LATE SHOW": In Bush`s address last night, he said many, many improvements have been made in Iraq. He said, for example, the roads have been improved, schools have been improved, medical care has improved. Now, if only that could happen here.

I`ve seen "War of the Worlds." And for those of you who haven`t seen it, I don`t want to spoil the ending, but Tom Cruise saves the Earth by converting the aliens to Scientology.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

BRYANT: Tonight on "The Late Show," Dave welcomes actress Jennifer Connelly.

HAMMER: Still some time for you to sound off in our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT "Question of the Day." News reporters: Should they ever have to give up their sources? Vote at CNN.com/showbiztonight or write us at showbiztonight@CNN.com. Your e-mails live, next.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

BRYANT: We`ve been asking you to vote online on our SHOWBIZ TONIGHT "Question of the Day." News reporters: Should they ever have to give up their sources?

Well, the votes so far says 44 percent of you say that yes, reporters should have to give up their sources, 56 percent of you say no, they should not.

And we`ve gotten some e-mails. Alma (ph) from Texas writes, "Reporters should not give up their sources. It is their right to safely protect the people who give them the information."

But Michael from North Dakota disagrees. He says, "Reporters need to be confronted with reality. They do not have the right to hide their sources from the government."

Dorian (ph), also chiming in, from Michigan, writes, "Reporters should never give up their sources, because in my book, that`s called a snitch."

You can keep voting at CNN.com/showbiztonight.

HAMMER: You know what time it is, Karyn.

BRYANT: I do.

HAMMER: It time to see what`s playing on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT tomorrow.

BRYANT: Let`s take a look at the Showbiz Marquee.

Marquee Guy, take it away.

MARQUEE GUY: Tomorrow, Tom Cruise, think you know him? Not until you watch SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. His secret struggles as a child, Tom the businessman, and much, much more. Cruise on over to SHOWBIZ TONIGHT with the real Tom Cruise tomorrow.

Also tomorrow, 20 years ago, music`s biggest made history with Live Aid, and the world listened. Twenty years later, they`re doing it again with Live 8. We have your one-stop shopping guide to Live 8, tomorrow on SHOWBIZ TONIGHT.

HAMMER: I can`t wait to see Pink Floyd reunited on Saturday.

BRYANT: That`s going to be unbelievable.

HAMMER: Saw David Gilmore once, but this is going to be the real deal.

BRYANT: I`m looking forward to U2 with Paul McCartney. I think that`s going to be incredible, as well. Well, that is it for SHOWBIZ TONIGHT. I`m Karyn Bryant.
