CNN LIVE EVENT/SPECIAL

Interview With Nancy Carlson

Aired December 22, 2003 - 14:37   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale has hit Southern California. We're told the quake's epicenter was about 11 kilometers northeast of San Simeon and 8 kilometer just below the ground.
Initial reports say the quake was felt as a sustained and gentle rolling motion in downtown Los Angeles. Our Charles Feldman telling us that they actually fit it there in the bureau located on Sunset Boulevard there not far from downtown L.A. On the phone with us now Nancy Carlson from Nipona, California, just north of Fresno. Can you hear me OK, Nancy?

NANCY CARLSON, CALIF. RESIDENT: Yes, we're inland, we're on the coast.

PHILLIPS: All right. Now, tell me what you felt and at what time and what things look like in your area right now.

CARLSON: Well, I don't -- I'm sorry, I have no idea what time it was. It's 20 of 12:00, so about, I don't know, 20 minutes ago, I guess.

We were just all sitting around and all of a sudden we felt -- heard a noise and then a rolling sensation and then the walls started swaying. And it felt like the floors were buckling. I don't know. It just -- it was very severe. I haven't had one like that at all up here before.

We all got underneath doorways and things -- a few things fell off the walls, but we were lucky -- but the chandelier and everything were swaying like crazy.

PHILLIPS: Have you talked to any of your neighbors or been able to go outside yet and take a look at what's around you?

CARLSON: No, I think everything is fine outside. My son called from L.A. and they felt it, so they knew where it was, so they called to see if we were OK.

PHILLIPS: Did it -- he feel it shake his home? What part of Los Angeles does your son live in?

CARLSON: He was in Santa Monica at work. It was just rolling.

PHILLIPS: Just a rolling feeling, also?

CARLSON: Yes.

PHILLIPS: Structurally, your home is OK?

CARLSON: As far as I know. It sure creeped a lot but it seems to be fine.

PHILLIPS: When was the last earthquake that came through that you felt, I guess, in Nipona.

CARLSON: The last one was the big one we had in -- down in the Filmar -- not Filmar, but Santa Monica and North Ridge one. We just felt a little bit of it. Just very little.

PHILLIPS: All right Nancy Carlson coming to us from Nipona, California.
