CNN SATURDAY MORNING NEWS

Bremer Presents New Proposals to Iraqi Governing Council

Aired November 15, 2003 - 07:07   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: To Iraq now. U.S. administrator Paul Bremer is presenting some new proposals today to the Iraqi Governing Council. The Bush administration wants to accelerate the turnover of power to the Iraqis.
CNN's Alphonso Van Marsh is live in Baghdad for us this morning. Good morning to you, Alphonso.

ALPHONSO VAN MARSH, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning.

First I want to tell you a little bit more about violence against U.S. service members here in Iraq that brings the total number of U.S. forces killed since the United States invaded this country to over 400 people.

The attack took place in the Tunis area of Baghdad. Two U.S. military vehicles were traveling over a bridge when an improvised explosive device or bomb went off. One U.S. service member was killed, two others were injured.

And as you mentioned, the U.S. top administrator to Iraq, L. Paul Bremer, is meeting with the Iraqi Governing Council as we speak. He's supposedly talking about his plans, or the U.S. plans, to trade -- or to turn over authority to Iraqis, as well as his talks with U.S. President George W. Bush last week.

Now, it's important to remember that the Iraqi Governing Council has said that it doesn't want U.S. forces in its country. But U.S. officials have said that they need to be able to find a way to transition the power and find a way to do that, whereas U.S. or other international forces maintain a continued presence here.

Now, we expect to get details of how these talks are going in about an hour or so. That's when Iraqi Governing Council chairman (UNINTELLIGIBLE) -- Jalal, rather, Talabani is expected to talk to journalists. We'll bring those details to you, Heidi.

COLLINS: That's right. Of course we will. Alphonso Van Marsh, thanks so much, live from Baghdad this morning.
