CNN SATURDAY MORNING NEWS

U.S. Military Issued a new Look For Saddam Hussein

Aired August 2, 2003 - 07:01   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: The U.S. military has issued a new look for Saddam Hussein. Five pictures released by Central Command show what Saddam may look like now. The U.S. altered the pictures to match descriptions given by some witnesses. The pictures show Saddam with a beard, or without his trademark mustache. He is also shown with gray hair, which is what the latest sightings may have revealed.
We want to go to Iraq now and CNN's Rym Brahimi, standing by with the very latest on all of the news that's happening there this morning. Hello to you, Rym.

RYM BRAHIMI, CNN BAGHDAD BUREAU CHIEF: Hello, Heidi.

Well, one soldier has been killed, yet another U.S. soldier dead. He was from the 4th Infantry Division, and he was killed yesterday evening at 10:30 p.m. His convoy was attacked by rocket-propelled grenades. Three other soldiers were injured in that same attack. And this happened, basically, north of -- in the north of the country, not very far from Mosul.

Now, that incident is under investigation, say U.S. military officials. And another civilian was killed, this time an Iraqi woman. She was caught in crossfire, it seems, yesterday. Apparently there was an attack in a residential area against a convoy, a U.S. military convoy with six vehicles. Unknown assailants dropped explosive device on them. The U.S. soldiers fired, they say, in self-defense.

And in that firing, the Iraqi woman, who was just standing by, was killed. She was, obviously, near the location of the explosion as well, and that happened yesterday afternoon.

As you know, that -- you know, basically increases the level of tension, because there have been a certain number of cases now of Iraqi civilians being killed, inadvertently, or, you know, maybe by mistake, if I hesitate to use the word, but anyway, in botched raid attempts.

So basically, the situation of U.S. soldiers on the ground here continues to be fragile, Heidi.

COLLINS: As we might imagine. All right, Rym Brahimi live this morning from Iraq. Thanks.
