Ambush in Iraq, One Soldier Killed, Another Wounded

Aired July 22, 2003 - 06:02   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: We have word this morning of another U.S. soldier killed in Iraq today. It comes as the Iraqi Governing Council is on the move, at least part of it, before the government has sent three representatives to the United Nations in New York.
Live to Baghdad now and Harris Whitbeck.

Harris -- let's start with the latest American casualty. What happened?

HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Carol, that word just came in. Apparently, one U.S. soldier was killed and another one was wounded when the convoy that they were traveling in was attacked by gunmen carrying rocket-propelled grenade launchers and small arms. The attack occurred on a convoy on a highway between Balad and ar- Ramadi (ph). This is within the area known as the Sunni triangle, which has been the scene of most of the attacks on U.S. military troops here since the occupation began several months ago.

Now, all of this occurs as the Iraqi Governing Council has sent a delegation to New York to meet with the U.N. Security Council. That three-person delegation will address the council today and ask that it be recognized as Iraq's official representative of the United Nations.

They are also expected to talk about a report, which was issued yesterday by the U.N., a report in which the U.N. said it could help the Iraqi administration, providing assistance in human rights, the development of independent media and the training of an Iraqi police force.

The U.N. report was also critical of U.S. actions in Iraq. Special Representative Sergio de Mello is especially concerned about the U.S. treatment of detainees in Iraq.

Now, there is still some controversy here in Iraq on the confirmation of this Iraqi Governing Council, which was installed by the U.S. a little over a week ago. There was a protest in Baghdad today. About 200 former political prisoners, who had been jailed during the Saddam Hussein regime, protested, saying that they, too, feel that they have a right to participate in the new administration of Iraq. And they say that so far, they feel their right to participate in the new government hasn't been respected -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Harris Whitbeck reporting live from Baghdad this morning.
