CNN SUNDAY MORNING

Homecoming at Ft. Stewart

Aired July 6, 2003 - 10:56   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

FREDRICKA WHITFIELD, CNN ANCHOR: It was truly a happy holiday weekend for some military families at Fort Stewart in South Georgia. Nine hundred support troops of the 3rd Infantry came home from Iraq. To bring us up to date on the reunion David Mattingly joins us from Ft. Stewart. Hi there.
DAVID MATTINGLY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Fredricka. Ft. Stewart, Georgia is home to part of the 3rd infantry division. Those were the soldiers who literally led the charge from Kuwait through Iraq all the way into Baghdad. Well, now, some of these troops who were there supporting the 3rd infantry helping to keep them moving are now coming home.

These are members -- the 900 members of the 24th core support group. They walked in last night some of them to cheers, tears and those all-important welcome home hugs and kisses. These men and women had the difficult jobs of making sure troops had things like water, food, everything from ammunition to gasoline, mail service, communications, what have you.

Right up to the front lines in some cases, they were quite literally the lifeline for soldiers in combat. But now these support troops are home and very thankful for the support they're now getting here.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

MATTINGLY: How does it feel to be home, mom?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: There's no word to explain it. No word at all. I'm just happy to be home with her and my mom. That's all.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Great, like unbelievable. We've been waiting the whole time, six months. Six months since we left.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I need a couple days off, share with my family, eat real a food, and be back to work.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MATTINGLY: That sounds like the plans for just about every soldier we talked to last night. But some good news here, Fredricka, every member of that support group coming home safe and sound. Not one single fatality.

WHITFIELD: All right, David Mattingly, thanks very much. Appreciate it.
