CNN BREAKING NEWS

Pentagon: 5 Marines Killed in Iraq Helicopter Crash

Aired May 19, 2003 - 17:32   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: At the top of the broadcast, we told you about a bit of breaking news, the crash of a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter in Iraq.
CNN's Jamie McIntyre back with us from the Pentagon with further details.

Hello, Jamie.

JAMIE MCINTYRE, CNN SR. PENTAGON CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Miles.

Well, the update from the initial reports at the scene, it does appear that four U.S. Marines have been killed in the crash of their CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter in a waterway near Karbala this morning in Iraq. According to those initial reports, the four Marines were the only ones on board when the helicopter went down, apparently the result of an accident, not hostile fire. A fifth Marine apparently also has lost his life when he dived into the waterway to attempt to rescue the crew and did not resurface. So five deaths, four as a result of the crash of the helicopter, one from a failed rescue attempt from a U.S. Marine on the ground.

Again, no indication of hostile fire. It appears that the crash was an accident -- Miles.

O'BRIEN: CNN's Jamie McIntyre at the Pentagon, thank you very much.
