Bush Monitors Developments in Iraq From Crawford Ranch

Aired April 19, 2003 - 08:34   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: Nations bordering Iraq are calling for U.S. forces to establish order and then leave Iraq as quickly as possible.
For White House reaction to that, we turn now to Suzanne Malveaux near the president's ranch in Crawford, Texas -- hello, Suzanne.

SUZANNE MALVEAUX, CNN WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Heidi.

Well, President Bush is spending the long holiday weekend at his Crawford ranch and tomorrow he's actually going to be visiting with some of the troops at Fort Hood. He's going to be attending a church service there. And Fort Hood, as you know, very important. Home to about half of the 42,000 soldiers that are in Iraq at this time.

Now, the president, of course, focusing on the reconstruction effort, really trying to move as quickly as possible to get primarily the U.N. to lift the economic sanctions against Iraq. Already it is a process that has come under fire in some ways. Some controversy over some members of the U.N. Security Council just which way they want to see this whole thing go.

We have already seen thousands of protesters taking the streets inside of Baghdad, calling for U.S. soldiers and coalition forces to get out of the country as quickly as possible. And also just yesterday, there was a meeting of the foreign ministers of countries surrounding Iraq, also calling for the same. They say that the United States needs to move forward in securing the country, providing electricity, as well as other resources, but at the same time, they want to see those U.S. forces, some consider them occupation forces, to get out as quickly as they can.

Also, the president, of course, looking forward not only at the economic situation inside of Iraq, but the economic situation here. We are told that the president is going to be taking a day trip out of Washington some time this week. He's going to be promoting his economic, his growth package and what that means is about $550 billion in tax cuts -- Heidi.

COLLINS: All right, Suzanne Malveaux in Crawford, Texas.

Thanks so much.
