Black Hawk Missing at Fort Drum

Aired March 11, 2003 - 15:15   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: Speaking of Jamie McIntyre, he is standing by live for us now at the Pentagon with some breaking news.
Jamie, what you got?

JAMIE MCINTYRE, CNN PENTAGON CORRESPONDENT: We have a report that within the last hour, a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter flying a training mission near Fort Drum, New York is reported missing. It may have crashed or it may have had to make an emergency landing. A search is underway. We don't have a lot of details, except that the helicopter was on a routine mission when it apparently dropped off the radar screen.

No one saw any smoke or any sign of an impact, so they don't know exactly what happened to it, but they are not in radio communication with it. A search is underway.

A Black Hawk can typically carry anywhere between 12 or up to 15 troops on it. We don't know how many people were on this and we don't know for sure that it is from the 10th Mountain division. The 10th Mountain division is -- are the troops normally based at Fort Drum, but other troops also use that Army training range. So at this point, we can just tell you that a Black Hawk is missing. It may have crashed. A search is underway -- Heidi.

COLLINS: All right. Jamie, we'll of course come back to you if any new developments arise.
