Department of Homeland Security Closely Monitoring Situation

Aired February 21, 2003 - 10:53   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We have Jeanne Meserve with us right now, and she and her team have been talking with somebody from the homeland defense department.
Let's bring Jeanne in.

Jeanne, have you been able to talk with them?

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, we talked to Brian Rohrcathy (ph), who's the deputy press secretary in the Department of Homeland Security. He says the Department of Homeland Security Coordination Center in Washington is closely monitoring the situation in New York.

According to him, initial reports indicate that the fire may have started from a barge. He says that is all the information they have at this point. The Coast Guard is responding, and FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, New York operations center, is on alert and monitoring the situation as it develops, and that is all they're saying at this point.

KAGAN: We'll keep checking with you in Washington. Jeanne Meserve in Washington, thank you.
