Man Slain With Machete in Washington State

Aired January 19, 2003 - 11:19   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: Authorities are reporting a bizarre and brutal slaying in Kent, Washington.
It began with a parking lot crash, and witnesses say it ended with one driver attacking the other with a machete.

Alison Grande from our affiliate, KIRO -- KIRO TV, reports.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

SHAWN ALEXANDER, WITNESS: It was scary, it's scary. I mean, it's right in my backyard. It was -- it's frightening.

ALISON GRANDE, KIRO TV CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Shawn Alexander heard sirens and came running. She saw an SUV on its side, a sports car, smashed and a man dying in the parking lot.

ALEXANDER: His head was all gashed open. It was gross.

PAUL PETERSON, KENT, WASHINGTON POLICE: It appears that the SUV came in here and struck the smaller car and rolled. The windshield is smashed out of that car. The suspect got out of his car and attacked the owner of the smaller car.

GRANDE: Attacked him with a machete, according to police.

The victim, a 52-year-old man from Federal Way, was a real estate broker and Ki Kim's (ph) boss.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I feel so bad, you know, because my broker, he is a nice guy, you know. He is a good man. And I don't know what to say.

GRANDE: Kim recognized the suspect and says his boss had done business with him.

PETERSON: The suspect, between the time of the attack and prior to our arrival, in that couple of minutes, drank Round-Up weed killer.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

COLLINS: That was Alison Grande reporting.

And as you heard in the story, police say the victim was a realtor and had recently sold the suspect a piece of property, but it is not clear if that played a role in the attack.
