Roone Arledge Dead at 71

JUDY WOODRUFF, CNN ANCHOR: Some breaking news, some sad news to report to you.
And that is that CNN has learned of the death of a legend in the world of television news and sports: Roone Arledge at the age of 71. He was formerly head of ABC Sports and then ABC News, ABC Sports from the late '60s to 1986, at which point he took over ABC News, was head of -- actually, overlapping head of ABC News from 1977 until 1998.

Roone Arledge was the man who created so many programs we now identify with ABC: "Nightline," "20/20," "This Week With David Brinkley." It was Roone Arledge who Barbara Walters to ABC from NBC. Again, this word just coming to CNN: at the age of 71, Roone Arledge dead. We'll have more details as we have them.
