Aired November 22, 2002 - 07:34   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Quickly, we want to go to a developing story again out of the Middle East. Breaking news from Jenin in the West Bank. A senior U.N. worker shot and killed in Jenin.
We want to get to our bureau and Jerrold Kessel there in Jerusalem, who's getting more on this now -- Jerrold, what have you found out?

JERROLD KESSEL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Bill, we can confirm that a British man working for UNRA, the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees, has been shot and killed in the Jenin refugee camp. That's a one part of the West Bank. Exact circumstances not clear, but there certainly was gunfire, a gun battle going on between Israeli troops, who'd gone into Jenin again, as they periodically do, into that refugee camp, exchanging fire with Palestinian militants. The Palestinians had said originally that the man died of shots from an Israeli sniper. Hospital, doctors at the Jenin hospital saying he took two bullets in the chest then, also an accusation that the Israeli ambulance, that the ambulance was delayed in getting there.

The Israeli Army confirming that there was a gun, exchange of gunfire, but saying it's not been established at all how the man came to die. His name is being withheld pending notification of the family by the United Nations. The Israeli Army also flatly rejecting that accusation that the ambulance was held up. They say the ambulance was sent the moment it was known that a U.N. man had been hit and he was found to be dead on arrival of the ambulance.

But this clearly a serious incident in Jenin. We also know in the same battle that was going on there, exchange of fire, a young Palestinian boy either age 10 or 12, not yet clear, had been shot and killed in that fire by Israeli troops -- Bill.

HEMMER: Thank you, Jerrold.

Breaking news there. We'll track it throughout the morning.

Many thanks, Jerrold Kessel there in Jerusalem.
