CNN SUNDAY MORNING

12-Year-Old Saves Mother From Mugging

Aired November 10, 2002 - 07:37   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

HEIDI COLLINS, CNN ANCHOR: An unbelievable story now about a child's hero. A 12-year old boy and his mother were having dinner at their home in Canada when the door suddenly burst open.
Reporter Jeff Little with CNN affiliate CTV has the story.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JEFF LITTLE, CTV CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Kevin Brezuk is like any other 12-year old boy. But last night when it seemed his mother's life was being threatened, Kevin did something extraordinary.

KEVIN BREZUK, 12 YEARS OLD: I walked over to him, then I started stabbing him the shoulder. And that's when he let go of my mom's purse.

LITTLE: Three men wearing masks burst into the Brezuk home. They attacked Kevin's mother, Gina, demanding she give up her purse, which was full of money. That's when Kevin rushed to the rescue.

K. BREZUK: So I ran in the kitchen and grabbed a knife. And then I came back and started stabbing the guy in the shoulder. And another guy came up, trying to grab me. So I hit him. And then him and his friend walked over towards the door and all three of them ran out.

LITTLE: It's believed the men may have seen the cash when Gina paid her bill at this gas station. It was shortly after that that the home invasion occurred.

GINA BREZUK, MOTHER: They were pulling my arm, pulling my purse, trying to shake my purse out of my hand, push me up against the table, and this and that. And he never let me take it for not even five minutes.

And he -- yes, it was back in here with that weapon.

LITTLE: Police are commending the boys' actions.

LUCH BERTI, CALGARY POLICE: I'd say it was a courageous act. Obviously, he was defending his mother, his home. The criminal court allows for that.

LITTLE (on camera): And while police are commending Kevin for his actions, they say that it could have backfired. And both he and his family are lucky that the three men fled, instead of staying in the home and inflicting more violence.

Jeff Little, CTV News, Calgary.
