PAULA ZAHN, CNN ANCHOR: We wanted to bring you up to date on some breaking news in Erfurt, Germany. Police are now confirming that at least 18 people have died as a result of a school shooting here. Among those dead: two teachers, a police officer. The former student who started this whole thing is also believed to have been dead. Police are saying he was expelled several weeks ago.

Police commandos rushed into the Gutenberg Gymnasium in the city to get an undetermined number of trapped students out of there. Police cannot confirm at this hour how many of the rest of the dead actually were students.

All they will tell at this hour, that you have two teachers dead, a police officer, and one of the students they believe is responsible for this shooting. They apparently -- the commando team encountered no resistance as they went into the school. It is possible, police say, that a second gunman is barricaded inside. This is very latest from Erfurt, Germany. As we have more details, we will bring them to you live.
