JEANNE MESERVE, CNN ANCHOR: The conflict in the Middle East goes on unabated. For the second weekend in a row, there has been a suicide bombing in Haifa, Israel. This time, the bomber is the only one killed, but 29 people were hurt. The attack comes as New York's mayor, mayor-elect, and governor are all in Jerusalem.

More on that from Jerusalem Bureau Chief, Mike Hanna.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

MIKE HANNA, CNN JERUSALEM BUREAU CHIEF: Ongoing violence in the region, four Palestinians have been shot and killed by Israeli security forces near the West Bank city of Tulkarem in disputed circumstances. The Israeli forces say that their troops were conducting an operation in a village near Tulkarem. When four Palestinian police officers opened fire on them they returned fire, says Israel, and killed the four.

However, Palestinian sources insist that the shooting of the four Palestinian police officers was unprovoked. In Haifa, another suicide bomb attack.

A week ago there was one with which a number of Israelis lost their lives. In this attack, there were no fatalities apart from the man who was carrying the explosives. However, more than 20 Israelis were injured. The man who had the explosives strapped to his body was shot and killed by police at the scene.

Amidst the violence, renewed attempts to establish a truce on the ground. Security leaders from both sides are meeting to discuss some kind of security arrangement. Present at that meeting, U.S. Envoy Anthony Zinni, who was sent out to the region over a week ago to establish a cease-fire and, more importantly, insure that the cease- fire is observed by all parties.

Well, over the past 10 days, no sign of a cease-fire whatsoever, but still Anthony Zinni remains in the region, attempting to get to the leaders from both sides; in particular on this day, security leaders from both sides, to establish some form of cooperation on the ground, which could, in time lead, to some form of truce.

Mike Hanna, CNN, Jerusalem.
