MARTIN SAVIDGE, CNN ANCHOR: New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani holding his afternoon briefing on the U.S. recovery efforts; we'll listen in.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

MAYOR RUDOLPH GIULIANI, NEW YORK CITY: steel is 230,774 tons, 12,824 trucks. And it's much more open now to removal efforts.

The count at this point at the family center is 1,670 families came in for services on Friday; 664 today, or as of about an hour ago today on Saturday. And we've had 1,382 applications for death certificates.

The missing persons number from the police department remains the same, which is 4,979. That number has not changed.

And the number of bodies that have been recovered is 393, and we have had 335 of those identified. And that still continues.

The traffic situation for Monday, but I guess also for Tuesday, Monday is a holiday but there still will be a number of businesses open. The stock exchange is open, banks are open. So I guess you would consider it an impact like half a holiday. The schools will be closed, some businesses will be closed. But the stock exchange and banks will be open.

We're going to change the restriction on single-occupancy vehicles so that it's from 6:00 to 11:00 rather than 6:00 to noon. But it will still -- the ban will still remain in effect from 63rd Street South for the entrances to the city from 63rd Street South, except we will take one hour off. So it will be 6:00 to 11:00 rather than noon.

I want to remind people on Monday the Brooklyn ferry will be operating even though it's Columbus Day and, again, a holiday but a holiday only for some businesses, not all.

And tomorrow we're going to open the downtown area east of Broadway to vehicular traffic and see how it works. So that, for example, it'll be possible to go by car to the South Street Seaport, which has not been possible since the time of the attack on September 11. It's been closed off. We're going to try it tomorrow, see how it works, and then consider whether we're going to open it during business days later on in the week.

We anticipate restoring alternate side parking restrictions on Thursday, and people should start planning for that.

And the Columbus Day parades are going forward. Tomorrow, one in the Bronx, one in Staten Island. And then on Monday, a Columbus parade in Manhattan on Fifth Avenue.

SAVIDGE: New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani as he is updating the recovery efforts here in New York City after the attack on the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center buildings.
