CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: But first, we're going to get a check of business with David Haffenreffer.

Hi, David.

DAVID HAFFENREFFER, CNN FINANCIAL NEWS CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol. Good morning, Catherine.

Well, investors are awaiting some news about the jobs picture for the previous month this morning. At 8:30 a.m. Eastern time, we'll get the employment report for the month of September. The jobless rate is expected to just tick up by one-tenth of one percentage point to 5 percent. That would be up from 4.9 percent during the month of September, but the figures are not expected to accurately reflect the impact of the September 11 attacks because data was collected both before and after that date.

In the meantime, stock index futures at this point are pointing to a mixed to higher open for us today. This despite some disappointing news from two tech heavyweights. Both Gateway Computer and chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices say their third quarter losses will be wider than expected. Gateway says the September 11 attacks hurt demand. Yesterday, Gateway's largest rival, Dell, said just the opposite, that its quarter was on track and orders had rebounded quicker than it expected.

We could also get some guidance from Sun Microsystems today. The server maker is holding an investor's conference call this morning.

And that is a quick look at business news today.
