LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Time for a check of the morning's business news.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: David Haffenreffer standing by at our financial news center in New York.

David, it sounds like the markets liked what the president had to say yesterday?

DAVID HAFFENREFFER, CNN FINANCIAL NEWS CORRESPONDENT: Yes, certainly. And remember yesterday at this time the futures were pointing to a weaker start for the day for us, then they heard -- got the news from the president and shot the markets higher, certainly over the course of the afternoon.

What we will see today is if we can build on yesterday's big gains. The early indications, at least at this hour, are for a flat to higher open for us today.

One factor that might weigh on the markets this morning is Corning. The company is warning that third quarter results will fall far short of expectations. The world's top maker of fiber optic cable has been struggling with the slowing telecom industry. Corning says it may also cut another 4,000 jobs this year.

Dell Computer holding its fall business update a little bit later on this morning. Executives at the PC giant will brief analysts on how the company is handling the slowing economy and whether the September 11 attacks have hurt operations.

And we'll get one of the few solid figures on the economy following the attacks, weekly jobless claims will show how many Americans filed for first-time unemployment benefits for the week ending September 29.

Recapping Wednesday's market action, the Dow industrials rallied 173 points. The Nasdaq soared 88 points. That was a 5.9 percent advance.

This is the latest from the financial news desk in New York.

Carol, back to you.

LIN: All right, thank you so much, David.
