LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Wall Street is waiting to see if the Federal Reserve will drop interest rates to its lowest -- their lowest level in nearly four decades.

CNN's David Haffenreffer joins us now. He's got more on that and some other business news as well.

David, good morning.

DAVID HAFFENREFFER, CNN FINANCIAL NEWS CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Leon.

Yes, watching and waiting. Investors, for the most part, expecting the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates to help to boost the economy. A decision expected at about 2:15 p.m. Eastern time. That will put Wall Street on Fed Watch for much of today's session. As of now, the stock index futures are pointing to a mixed to possibly weaker open for us this morning. Trading ahead of the Fed meeting was more cautious than in recent days. The Dow industrials on Monday falling 10 points. The tech heavy Nasdaq composite losing 18 points.

Keep an eye on shares of Compaq Computer today. The company warning it would post a third quarter operating loss and lower-than- expected sales. Compaq said it was hurt by the attacks and a typhoon in Taiwan, which hit its key suppliers. Compaq last month agreed to merge with Hewlett-Packard.

And that is it from the financial news desk here in New York. CNN, we'll be right back.
