America's New War: U.S. Special Forces Conducted Operations in Afghanistan

JOHN KING, CNN SR. WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Now let's return to Christiane Amanpour in Islamabad, Pakistan.

Christiane, you are familiar with the terrain, and you heard Miles reporting there, they were going, perhaps looking for places to land the plane, to land helicopters, to set up supply routes. What do you think, from your experience, where might they might be and what might they be looking for?

CHRISTINE AMANPOUR, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, as you're expert just explained, they precisely could be trying to do that kind of broad intelligence-gathering operation, and there are plenty, obviously, in a country like Afghanistan, which is full of mountains, and valleys and plains, plenty of places where that could be achieved.

Of course we have absolutely no idea of what's going on in terms of special forces or special operations. There's been obviously a lot of speculation, as there always is, in these kinds of deployments. People assume that this will go on. But we've had no information or confirmation. We asked specifically today of a government spokesman, who said he had no information or comment on that for us. So we don't know.

On another issue, there is also diplomatic initiative and operations going on, as you know. The Pakistanis have sent another delegation, which is actually on its way back right now, and apparently, according to a phone call that CNN placed to a senior Taliban official in Afghanistan, at those meetings, the meeting failed. It failed in its objectives, which were according to our sources here in Pakistan, not only to try to convince the Taliban that they really must cooperate with the international community, but that they should at least as a gesture of goodwill release the eight international aid worker, including two Americans who are being held...
