JONATHAN MANN, CNN ANCHOR: And we're now in a position to confirm that in an investigation that stretches all of the way around the world, some promising progress here in the United States. The discovery and retrival of the black boxes from the rubble at the Pentagon.

CNN's Bob Franken joins us now with more on this story. Bob?

BOB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, John. Pentagon sources confirm that they are about to put out a news release saying that overnight, the black boxes, those are the ones that record data and voice information, on the American Airline 757 which crashed into the Pentagon, causing such a calamity, the black boxes have now been discovered overnight.

We had reported yesterday afternoon that officials has heard pings in the rubble, rubble which of course was so difficult to get to. You can see when you see pictures of the outside of the building that it's a very precarious situation, that it is just really, really in chaos and, of course, just a construction nightmare. But they had been hearing pings first the day before, then yesterday and now we're hearing that they have gotten the black boxes. They are in possession the black boxes from the plane, which had taken off from Dulles Airport and had ultimately been turned around and crashed into the Pentagon -- Jon.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: All right, thank you very much. Bob Franken reporting live there.
