Fugitive Wanted in Connection With Death of Abortion Doctor Arrested in France

Aired March 29, 2001 - 11:49 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

STEPHEN FRAZIER, CNN ANCHOR: Just to state again, James Kopp, who has been a fugitive for more than two-and-a-half years and he's been wanted in connection with the death of an abortion doctor in western New York, has been arrested and is being detained now in France.

We can get some more information about this case from Kelli Arena who covers the Justice Department for us, and who's in Washington now.

Kelli, good morning.

KELLI ARENA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Stephen.

Well, Mr. Kopp, as you know, has not been charged with anything. But he is wanted in connection with the shooting of a doctor who performed legal abortions. That shooting happened in 1998, in October.

Mr. Kopp fled the country; apparently has been wanted by the FBI, one of the top 10 fugitives wanted by the FBI since that time.

We are told that he was arrested, is being detained in France.

Further details are not available just yet. We are waiting to hear more from the FBI. They do say that they will have extensive details available for us probably within the hour.

But for right now, good news for the FBI: James Kopp has been arrested, one of the FBI's top 10 fugitive -- Stephen.

FRAZIER: Kelli, we know that James Kopp was named in this because of the fact that they found his car about two months after the shooting of Dr. Slepian that had been parked for an unusually long time in the Slepian's neighborhood.

Do we have any sense now of what led them to him in France at this time?

ARENA: We do not, Stephen, I'm sorry to say. FBI is scrambling here in Washington to get information from its field office in Buffalo which was alerted first of the arrest in France. So we will get those details as soon as we can to you. But right now, no. And we're not even sure exactly what his role was in that shooting, if you remember way back. He's just wanted in connection with it, but has not been charged with anything specific.

FRAZIER: Exactly. Kelli Arena at the Justice Department.
