27-Year FBI Veteran Arrested On Espionage Charges

Aired February 20, 2001 - 7:45 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

COLLEEN MCEDWARDS, CNN ANCHOR: All right, we want to keep you up to date on a breaking news story we're following for you this morning here on CNN: the arrest of a 27-year veteran of the FBI on charges of spying.

CNN's Justice Department correspondent Kelli Arena joins us now with some new information on this.

Kelli, what have you got?

KELLI ARENA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Colleen, we are told that a key to this whole investigation was that the FBI did obtain KGB documents, which allowed the bureau to track Hanssen down.

As you know, they had been watching him for at least four months before they caught him in the act of making a drop at a local park in Northern Virginia, basically leaving some information for a Russian counterpart.

As you know, Hanssen had been involved in 25 years in counter- terrorism. There are indications that he was also involved in the altered Ames incidence. As you remember all, Ames compromised several U.S. intelligence officials. And Hanssen apparently confirmed information that was used by the Russians against those intelligence officials.

So, much, much deeper and much more complicated than it appears at first blush. But as you know, at 12:45, we will be hearing from FBI director Louis Freeh who will give us all of the details on this story. And once again Hanssen will appear in court at 11 o'clock today in the eastern district of Virginia -- Colleen.

MCEDWARDS: Kelli, anymore information about Hanssen?

ARENA: Well, he is a father of six, I have been told. He is in his mid-50s. He has been with the agent for -- with the agency for 27 years, as you know, a veteran.

I don't have anymore information than that. But this is going to impact a very large family. This was not a man who was a loner. Obviously, you know, with six children, this is going to affect many lives.

MCEDWARDS: All right, CNN's Kelli Arena. Thanks very much, Kelli.

Adding to our coverage here that the FBI did obtain KGB documents that actually allowed them to pinpoint this person or at least they say they have pinpointed this person. They had been watching him for four months. Allegations, again, of spying.
