Saturday Morning News

Terry McAuliffe to be Next DNC Chairman

Aired February 3, 2001 - 9:04 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Now, there's been a new development within the hour on the election for the Democratic Party chairman.

CNN national correspondent Bob Franken is covering the DNC meeting in Washington. He joins us now with the latest. Bob, good morning to you, sir.

BOB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Good morning to you.

And the latest is, is that Maynard Jackson, the former mayor of Atlanta, and Terry McAuliffe, who was the man he was running against to be Democratic national chair, are just begun walking around together throughout this hotel where the Democratic National Committee is meeting, because they came to an accommodation where, in fact, McAuliffe will take over the Democratic National Committee chairmanship, something he was expected to do anyway, but he won't have to do it in a fight with Maynard Jackson.

Jackson has agreed to a deal where he will take on important party positions having to do with grassroots development and, as a matter of fact, voter rights actions, which would be in answer to what occurred in Florida. Jackson will have a prominent role, according to this arrangement, and Terry McAuliffe will not have to go through a vote and speeches against him.

So in about the next half hour or sometime this morning, McAuliffe will assume the chairmanship of the Democratic National Committee.

Now, the meetings were going on even as a minor controversy was flying around about apparently a slip of the tongue, McAuliffe says, when he yesterday was -- used the term "colored people," when he says he meant to say, "people of color," referring to a question about intimidation against minorities. This has been something that's been sort of percolating overnight. It had no influence, apparently, on the meetings that are occurred.

The comments about it this morning are being made by Jackson, himself a person of color, who is saying that there's nothing to this, that, in fact, it is a mistake that he has made a couple of times in his career when he's been trying to make a speech and has wrapped things up.

So it looks like the Democrats are returning to a cordial arrangement. McAuliffe will be the chairman, Maynard Jackson will have a prominent role in the Democratic National Committee. The deal will be ratified at a meeting this morning -- Miles.

O'BRIEN: CNN's Bob Franken. He'll be joining Kelly Wallace in just a few moments to be taking your questions, and we invite you to send them in.
