Two Arrested for Assisting Recent Breakout by Texas Inmates

Aired February 2, 2001 - 10:33 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

STEPHEN FRAZIER, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to take you now to Baylor county, Texas, where a person for the sheriff's department there is describing reactions to arrest two people more people who are connected in some way to the breakout by several inmates of a maximum security corrections facility in Texas a few weeks ago. These are people who may have been accomplices, we think, in helping to plant a car, getaway car.

Let's listen to these comments.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: ... the investigation part of it will be handled by the prison system, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and institutional division, and that's information you need to call the public relations and talk to them about.

QUESTION: Where were they arrested?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: They were arrested in Baylor county, and like I said, referring back, you will need to get that information from the institutional division from Texas Department of Corrections.

QUESTION: Sheriff, what's their demeanor like -- are they being cooperative, or are they kind of...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I have not talked to them. Right now, we're just -- we will book them in, process them, and you know. The investigative part of it is being handled by the Inspector General's office and the Texas Department of -- DPS. You'll need to take -- talk to them about it.

QUESTION: No magistrative here in this courthouse?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: We will -- they will be transferred to the judge.

QUESTION: Which is here in the courthouse?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: It'll be in the judge's office or wherever she wants for us to take them. We haven't on coordinated that part of it yet, but they will...

QUESTION: This morning some time? UNIDENTIFIED MALE: As soon as the judge is ready for them, we will take them there and magistrate them.

QUESTION: Sheriff, tell us -- like I said, my photographer was prepared to do the full camera, unless you think they're just going to be walked out of here. We obviously would like a shot of them. What would we need to do to get that?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I will, you know...

QUESTION: Coordinate that for us?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I will coordinate that.

FRAZIER: We are joining this news conference actually kind of late, when they're doing a little bit of housekeeping over how to cover this story. But let me set things in perspective for you. This is the Baylor county sheriff describing how two more people were arrested in association with that breakout of seven individuals from a Texas maximum security corrections facility.

We believe, from reports already issued, that these were two people, one of whom was the father of a recaptured prison escapee and the father's friend, and we believe that they will stand accused of purchasing a car to be used in the break out and stashing it in a place that was then communicated to the leader of the escapees for their use on their -- in their attempts to get away from this facility.
