Hunt for Fugitives Continues in Texas

Aired January 6, 2001 - 8:12 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Now on to Texas and that dramatic prison break. Criticism is building against Texas prison officials in the wake of the escape of seven violent criminals from a prison near San Antonio. The gang still at large after the breakout more than two weeks ago.

We get more on the story from CNN affiliate KEYE.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

UNIDENTIFIED TEXAN: Oh, yes, they've already killed and they'll probably kill again if they get desperate enough.

They're the worst type of people, you know, just, I don't know, they're just mean people.

UNIDENTIFIED TEXAN: I think they're punks.

CEAL SPELSE (ph), KEYE-TV (voice-over): All along Interstate 35 through the heart of central Texas, drivers keep an eye out for the seven convicts loose, possibly in this area. Judy Love and Peggy Willis (ph) traveled here from Houston.

PEGGY LOVE, TRAVELER: Oh, I'm locking my doors twice as much as I used to. You just don't know where they are. They could be any and I'm taking every precaution I can.

SPELSE: Bobby Dixon works nights and commutes on I35.

BOBBY DIXON, AUSTIN COMMUTER: I think about it all the time, every time I leave home, you know, where them guys might be.

SPELSE: Since the shooting in Terrent County (ph) in North Texas and the possible sighting in San Marcus (ph), these folks are taking a second look at these pictures.

(on camera): Even folks who haven't seen much on the seven escapees say they've heard just enough to know these men need to be caught and caught quickly.

UNIDENTIFIED TEXAN: They're very dangerous. Very dangerous. I think they just do whatever they need to do to get away.

UNIDENTIFIED TEXAN: I say their appearance could have changed. They could have done something to alter what they look like. It's just probably more important for people to be observant of what's going on around them.

DIXON: I think as long as the gentlemen are loose here, I think a lot of people are just in fear every day.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

O'BRIEN: That report from Ceal Spelse of our CNN affiliate, KEYE. Also today, "The Dallas Morning News" reporting a prison memo shows the gang escaped during an unsupervised lunch.
