Now Showing: 'Traffic'

Aired January 6, 2001 - 7:26 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: All right. Movie theater owners are hoping for a "Traffic" jam this weekend.

CNN's Anna Hovend (ph) takes a look at the new and well-acclaimed film "Traffic."

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "TRAFFIC")

MICHAEL DOUGLAS, ACTOR: We're going after their top guys.

MIGUEL FERRER, ACTOR: Your government surrendered this war a long time ago.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

ANNA HOVEND, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): "Traffic" is director Steve Soderbergh's look at the war on drugs from several angles. Michael Douglas is the nation's new drug czar.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "TRAFFIC")

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS: None of my friends can freakin' believe my dad's actually the drug czar.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HOVEND: But the drug problem for him begins at home.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "TRAFFIC")

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS: You might want to pencil in a little face time with your daughter.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR: See? Now you see.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTRESS: Oh, let's do some more.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HOVEND: Meanwhile, a pair of DEA agents are on the front lines of the drug war.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "TRAFFIC")

FERRER: You hire drivers with nothing to lose and throw a lot of product at the problem. This has worked for years.

BENICIO DEL TORO, ACTOR: I have actually dreams about this, about busting the top people, rich people, white people.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HOVEND: Benicio Del Toro is a Mexican police officer who tries to do a good job in a corrupt world.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "TRAFFIC")

FERRER: In Mexico, law enforcement is an entrepreneurial activity.

DEL TORO: You should feel good about this, not feel like a traitor.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HOVEND: Catherine Zeta-Jones and her husband seem to have the perfect life, until she discovers the source of her husband's income.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "TRAFFIC")

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR: (inaudible)

CATHERINE ZETA-JONES, ACTOR: (inaudible), (inaudible)?

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR: ... bench warrant.

ZETA-JONES: What is going on? They came into the house, they just took him away.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR: The DEA has got him.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR: Do not discuss anything over the telephone.

ZETA-JONES: How am I going to survive this?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HOVEND: She's determined to keep up her lifestyle.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP, "TRAFFIC")

ZETA-JONES: The dough is high-impact, pressure molded. It's odorless, undetectable by the dogs, undetectable by anyone.

I want the principal witness against my husband killed.

UNIDENTIFIED ACTOR: Here's your dough.

(END VIDEO CLIP) HOVEND: "Traffic" is rated R.

With Now Showing, I'm Anna Hovend.
