Bush Names Four More Cabinet Nominees

Aired December 30, 2000 - 9:32 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Turning now from the chill of the winter to the hotbed of politics, President-elect George W. Bush named four more Cabinet nominees yesterday.

Bush nominated Wisconsin Governor Tommy Thompson as secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Rod Paige, who's a Houston school superintendent, as Bush's education secretary nominee, Anthony Principi was named as secretary of veterans affairs, and former Colorado Attorney General Gale Norton as the interior secretary nominee.

Now the president elect only has three more cabinet vacancies, energy, labor, and transportation secretaries.

Let's go now to CNN's Tony Clark. He's in Austin, Texas. He's got the latest on the Bush transition. Good morning again, Tony.

TONY CLARK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: (AUDIO GAP) White House. The lid is on. No news expected from the president-elect for the next couple of days. He is relaxing with friends and family at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, not expected to come back to Austin until sometime Monday. And so between now and then, while he may be doing some work at the ranch, we don't expect to be seeing or hearing anything of him until sometime perhaps on Tuesday.

Then next week, as you say, he's got three secretaries to name, to designate. He's got the secretary of labor, secretary of transportation, secretary of energy to name most likely next week. Aides say that he hopes to get all of those named by next week.

Then, on Wednesday and Thursday, he has an economics conference. It's going to be closed, it's going to be over at the governor's mansion. On Wednesday he's going to bring in different business leaders, he's going to have Larry Lindsey, one of his economics advisers, there, his Treasury secretary designate O'Neill is going to be there, and others.

They're going to talk about the shape of the economy. On Thursday, it's going to focus on high tech and education. He wants to get some input from business leaders from around the country, so he's going to be talking about that. Both of those expected to be closed meetings.

And then, as I say, sometime next week he's expected to name his remaining three secretaries.

Yesterday a busy day in Washington, D.C., naming four secretaries, secretary designate, perhaps the most controversial, former Colorado attorney general Gale Norton, she has been criticized by some environmentalists because of her work previously working in the department of interior.

But again, a busy week ahead, Kyra, for the president-elect, just three weeks now before inauguration day.

Kyra?

PHILLIPS: (AUDIO GAP) three positions to fill. Tony Clark, thank you.
