Holiday Shoppers Make Most of Final Hours

Aired December 24, 2000 - 4:00 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

GENE RANDALL, CNN ANCHOR: For all of you last-minute shoppers with more shopping to do, why are watching TV?

For those of you in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Deborah Feyerick is waiting to see you -- Deborah.

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Exactly; and I'll tell you, there are so many people here, the parking lot is simply a madhouse. This mall, elbow to elbow. Even within the last few hours this place has just gotten jam-packed. The stores are running out of boxes and people are simply running out of time; they've got just about two more hours until the doors close, and that means whatever they've bought is what they've bought.

Now we're joined here by the Rivera (ph) family. They came in from the Bronx.

Thanks for joining us -- the whole group here, and a couple of friends. Why shop at this hour -- two hours before stores close?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, I work very hard, so I had to do last minute shopping. And eventually I got to pull the family together on the weekend; and I had to come to New Jersey to get a better sale than what I usually find in New York.

FEYERICK: Did you find that you were getting some good values here?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Sure; very good values. The kids got good values on their toys, and the family got good values on their clothes.

FEYERICK: So do you have everything now -- this is it? I see you're heading out the door.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, I am through with my Christmas shopping.

FEYERICK: You got everything you wanted; nobody is left unattended?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Correct.

FEYERICK: OK; and as far as the drive home -- now you've got to go to the Bronx; do you think you're going to hit a little traffic on the way home, or you're hoping that... UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Sure, sure; probably just a little bit of traffic. it's not bad out here, not bad at all.

FEYERICK: And let me ask -- you guys now are all waiting for your Christmas gifts -- it's coming, it's coming; who's getting what this year?

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: I don't know what I'm getting; I'm hoping it's nice.

FEYERICK: And what about you? Do you know what you want?

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: No.

FEYERICK: You don't know what you want? Nothing at all?

UNIDENTIFIED CHILD: I don't know nothing.

FEYERICK: OK, we'll keep our fingers crossed; looks like you've got some good parents here and I'm sure they got you some pretty good gifts -- and Santa -- don't forget about Santa, he's looking after you, too.

Gene, as for you, we're working on your gift. We've got two more hours.

RANDALL: Deborah, have you finished your shopping.

FEYERICK: Yes, I did. I did the power shop; I bought a lot of different things. But I planned it all out, I thought about it, and so now it's all taken care of.

RANDALL: That is called reporter involvement; thank you, Deborah.
