Dick Cheney Hospitalized With Chest, Shoulder Pains

Aired November 22, 2000 - 9:30 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney is in a Washington hospital this morning. A spokeswoman says that Cheney was admitted as a precaution after complaining of chest and shoulder pains. She says that his blood work is normal and he is now resting comfortably.

Cheney previously had three mild heart attacks. He underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 1988. The former Wyoming congressman and White House chief of staff had traveled from Austin, Texas to Washington to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with his family.

Let's go now to where the story is at the George Washington University Hospital. CNN's Bob Franken standing by with the very latest now -- Bob.

BOB FRANKEN, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: And, Leon, for the moment, most of the questions are being referred to the Bush campaign. But we can tell you, through a variety of sources, that Cheney was brought in sometime between 5:00 and 6:00 a.m. today after complaining of what is variously described as chest and shoulder pains or discomforts.

He is resting comfortably, we're told by the hospital; no characterization of his condition. The hospital is trying to arrange a news conference sometime this morning, hopefully, with his cardiologist or others who might be able to speak with some knowledge of the condition of the former secretary. His cardiologist is here, Gary Mallecoff (ph). Arrangements are being made right now to try, as I said, to have that briefing.

But, again, very little information is being given. Secret service agents are here, Cheney's limousine is here. Of course everybody is watching this very closely. He does have this history of heart trouble. And although it is not our place right here to speculate on what it might be, several cardiologists have told CNN that oftentimes a bypass needs to be, in effect, refurbished after several years. It's been 12 years since Cheney has had his -- Leon.

HARRIS: Interesting. We'll have to check and see if that is the case in this case. Thanks much, Bob Franken. We'll get back to you in a bit.
