Israeli Helicopters Fire on Gaza City in Retaliation for Bus Attack

Aired November 20, 2000 - 11:28 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: We just want to give you the latest now on the breaking story that we've just heard reported from the Middle East, from Israel, by our Tom Mintier. Moments ago we had him on the phone.

We have learned that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has authorized a retaliation against a bombing that killed two Israelis and injured some children earlier this morning.

You're look now at the latest pictures that we've gotten from Gaza. And you can see that the city has been almost totally blacked out. We understand that the electricity generation source there, the power plant, was one of the targets that was hit by some number of rockets that have been fired by helicopter.

It's tough to get a figure on exactly how many. We've heard as many as eleven rockets may have been fired. One report says that witnesses are saying that these rockets were coming at the rate of about one per minute throughout Gaza City.

Tom Mintier also reported moments ago that the Israelis have identified 12 targets. We do not know if they have hit 12 sites or if they have only hit the one site with the barrage of rockets.

Again, this is a response, a rather heavy response, to a bombing incident that happened earlier this morning or overnight in Israel where a bomb actually exploded and killed two Israelis on a bus full of children. We understand a number of children were injured in that incident. There's still some questions as to who was responsible for that, but obviously the Israeli government is now saying that they are holding the Palestinian Authority responsible for it.

We'll continue to follow that story and bring you any developments as they come in.
