40-50 Employees Held Hostage at Target Department Store in Culver City, California

Aired November 6, 2000 - 9:31 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Want to bring you up an update in the situation that is happening in Southern California, in Culver City. Police are looking into what might have ended up being a botched robbery at a Target Department Store in Culver City, California. As many as 40 or 50 employees might have been inside that store when the robbery was taking place.

Showing you live pictures from Southern California. As we understand it, police are slowly emptying the building of people. As we mentioned, a number of employees were inside, and as people come outside, they're being asked to lay flat on the ground. Police not sure who could be a suspect and who could be an employee. So they are having the people lay down on the ground. And one by one, each person is being asked to get up, walk slowly towards police, being frisked and checking them out, and not -- just to make sure who might be a suspect and who might be hostage.

I believe we have somebody on the phone with us right now who can give us information.

Sir, who is with us?

RANDI JOSEPH, CULVER CITY PUBLIC INFORMATION OFC.: Hi, this is Randy Joseph. Randi Joseph. I am the public information officer for Culver City.

KAGAN: Great. Can you explain to us what is happening, please, in Culver City this morning?

JOSEPH: Actually. you were fairly accurate at this point. We have a situation where we got an early morning call from the employees at the Target on Jefferson Boulevard. There were somewhere between three and five armed robbers, with about 40 employees in the store.

We have one suspect in custody right now. And we also had a number of people leave out the back, and those folks are being checked to see whether or not they are suspects, or they are indeed employees.

So we are on the scene right now and we are waiting for more information.

KAGAN: Is the situation secure right now? Do you still think that there might be gunmen inside the store? JOSEPH: We believe that's a possibility. And I'm actually arriving on scene right now for more information, and I should be getting that. So, right now, I'm just driving up, I'm going to talk to the -- to the scene incident commander and get as much information back to the folks as I can as soon as possible.

KAGAN: OK, Randi, we are going to let you go in just a second so maybe you can get us some more information, and we will check back with you. But obviously, you can't see what we have on CNN right now because you are in your car, but the picture we are showing, it is from the back of the store, as people are being asked to slowly back up towards police at gun point, which would be a very scary situation for someone who thinks they have already been taken hostage.

JOSEPH: Right, that would be a scary situation. But in order to enable us to make sure that everyone is safe and make sure that we do in fact get the bad guys, we have to take that precaution for everyone's safety.

KAGAN: All right, Randi Joseph with Culver City. We will let you go. We will check back with you when you get to the scene, and can get some more information for us. Appreciate that information.
