Uss Cole Attacked: Lesser Injured Sailors to Return Home

Aired October 14, 2000 - 8:09 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Turning now to the other big story this morning, the attack on the Navy destroyer Cole in Yemen, while U.S. investigators conduct their probe, the ship's casualties have been taken to the Ramstein air base in Germany.

Let's go now to Ramstein and CNN's Chris Burns, who is on the phone from there.

Chris, what's the latest on the conditions of those being treated there?

CHRIS BURNS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well good morning, Miles.

Yes, actually, five are in most serious condition. Thirty-nine arrived overnight, as teams of about 50 different doctors have been working on these sailors who arrived overnight on two different flights. There are five who were in most serious condition. They -- at least some of them are being operated on today, mainly for severe broken bone cases, others also for glass. There was one woman who had a lot of glass in her face, and they were busy taking the glass out of her face.

Otherwise, the others, the 324 who were less seriously injured, are expected to go home in 24 to 48 hours, which could be some very good news for a lot of families.

On the other hand, the five bodies of the sailors were brought here overnight and left this morning, and they should be arriving in Dover Air Force Base in Delaware at 2:00 p.m. Eastern time.

No interviews have been granted yet by the sailors themselves, but we've heard stories from all kinds of sailors who've been through what this ordeal in that blast, one of them who had left the galley just minutes before the explosion. That galley was devastated, Miles.

O'BRIEN: All right, that's CNN's Chris Burns reporting live from Ramstein, Germany. Thanks very much.
