Palestinian Protesters Fill Times Square

Aired October 7, 2000 - 8:32 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LINDA STOUFFER, CNN ANCHOR: Well, the death and violence in the Middle East is impacting Palestinians here in the United States. Two thousand demonstrators filled New York's Times Square yesterday to protest the killings of Palestinians.

CNN's Deborah Feyerick has more.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): They carried flag draped coffins and waved Korans in the air. Palestinians far from their homeland, living in Brooklyn, angry at the violence in Israel.

UNIDENTIFIED DEMONSTRATOR: A head...

FEYERICK: Passions cry out for revenge, words shaking the normally peaceful coexistence of Jews and Muslims who live side by side and shop together along Coney Island Avenue.

YITTA HALBERSTAM: There's always been harmony and friendship and this is the first day of my life that I'm walking around with a sense of fear.

FEYERICK: New York City police are investigating 10 possible bias attacks against Jews this week. Mayor Rudy Giuliani called on local Jewish and Muslim leaders to sign a declaration of tolerance.

MAYOR RUDY GIULIANI (R), NEW YORK CITY: Whatever is going on in the Middle East or in other parts of the world, again, people in New York have a right to have very strong feelings about it, very strong passions about it, but they have no right to harm anyone else.

FEYERICK: Which has always been the case IN this part of Flatbush, Palestinians and Jews pursuing the American Dream.

(on camera): And are they really friends or are they just coexisting?

BOB KAPLAN, JEWISH COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL: I would say on the business level there's a lot of interaction. People are going to each other's stores. They're utilizing each other's institutions a lot. Language is a barrier here, by no doubt.

FEYERICK: Israeli born Naor Shaole has strong opinions about his homeland, wanting peace but not at the price of security. He says he never talks politics with his Palestinian customers.

SHAOLE NAOR, SHOP OWNER: Most of the Islamic people that I know from here are through the store, of course. They're very kind. They're very nice. They are well meaning. They're hard working people. I do not see any tension, I don't feel it, any tension.

UNIDENTIFIED REPORTER: Progress has been made. But Mr. Barak did not attend that meeting.

FEYERICK: Across town, Palestinian school principal Nadilu Abuasi watches the Middle East conflict every night with his children. He has worked hard to build ties with Brooklyn's Jewish community.

NADIL ABUASI, SCHOOL PRINCIPAL: The battle over who's right is not here in America, it is in Palestine. Here we are proud of the New York community.

FEYERICK: And yet, even in New York, when it comes to Israel, nothing is as simple as it seems.

Deborah Feyerick, CNN, New York.
