Bridgestone/Firestone, Steelworkers Union Reach Tentative Agreement

Aired September 4, 2000 - 5:07 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LINDA STOUFFER, CNN ANCHOR: And a developing story right now. We were telling you a few minutes ago about the talks between workers and Bridgestone/Firestone on this Labor Day. There is now word of a tentative agreement. We want to get the latest on this.

Mark Potter joins us on the phone with the details.

Mark, what do you know now?

MARK POTTER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, good morning.

We have been told by union officials that, indeed, a tentative agreement has been reached in the talks between Bridgestone/Firestone and the Steelworkers -- the United Steelworkers of America.

They have been negotiating around the clock all weekend, and a call came here to LaVergne, Tennessee from the negotiating committee to the local union. Tommy Reeder (ph), the secretary of local 1055L in LaVergne, took the call. It was from Garry Manning, the president of his local, who is a member of the negotiating committee, and he said that a tentative agreement, indeed, had been reached, which, of course, averts a strike between -- by the Steelworkers against the plant.

Tommy Reeder said that the presidents of the locals, of the nine plants that were the subject of this negotiation, agreed to the proposal from the company. It is a tentative agreement that they voted on. This now means that the proposal comes back to the various locals for discussion and for a vote to -- of approval by union the membership. So this is not final, but it is certainly a major step in the negotiations and it removes the strike threat that has been looming over Bridgestone/Firestone this Labor Day weekend.

STOUFFER: And how appropriate on Labor Day.

Mark Potter with the latest on that.

Again, a tentative agreement has been reached between workers and Bridgestone/Firestone.

Thank you, Mark, for that.
