Reform Party Presses on with Political Conventions

Aired August 12, 2000 - 9:14 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: In Long Beach, California, amid the pomp, there is a strange circumstance. The Reform Party has officially split into two factions, each nominating its own presidential candidate.

CNN national correspondent Gary Tuchman has more on the Reform Party's infighting.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JOHN HAGELIN (REF), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I accept with humility and with pride the mantle of H. Ross Perot.

GARY TUCHMAN, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Physicist John Hagelin will run for president of the United States under the banner of the Reform Party.

HAGELIN: I pledge to wage the most dynamic third party campaign in American political history, with your help.

PAT CHOATE, 1996 (REF) VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I move to nominate for the office of president of the United States of America Patrick J. Buchanan.

TUCHMAN: But in another room in the same California convention center, a roll call vote led to Pat Buchanan also being nominated under the Reform banner.

On Friday, he introduced this former L.A. school teacher and administrator as his running mate.

PAT BUCHANAN (REF), PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: She is a lady who does not cut her conscience to fit this year's fashion.

TUCHMAN: Ezola Foster has backed Buchanan since the 1996 elections, and the 62-year-old says she shares his philosophies, even on issues sensitive to many in the African-American community.

EZOLA FOSTER (REF), VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: The Confederate flag represented a side. It is part of our history. It is to be honored as part of our history and not used like some excuse to make a racial issue out of it. It is not a race issue.

TUCHMAN: Hagelin's running mate will be announced later today. In the meantime, there will likely be a court fight over $12.6 million in federal matching funds.

Buchanan was asked whether Ezola Foster could be ready to step in as the nation's commander in chief.

BUCHANAN: I think Ezola's foreign policy experience, I would agree, is about roughly comparable to that of George W. Bush.

TUCHMAN: Good-naturedly or not, Pat Buchanan will be leveling plenty of criticisms at the GOP and Democratic tickets.

(on camera): And what about his Reform rival, John Hagelin? The Buchanan campaign says he will not be criticized, just ignored.

Gary Tuchman, CNN, Long Beach, California.
