Senator Joe Lieberman to Join Democratic Ticket With Al Gore

Aired August 7, 2000 - 4:17 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Yes. We're getting indications now, Jan, that the junior senator from Connecticut is about ready to answer the call from Al Gore, which he received almost four hours ago now at his home here in New Haven, Connecticut. The call was just a brief call, asking if Senator Lieberman would accept Al Gore's invitation to become his running mate. He immediately said he would.

Since that call came, the senator has been holed up here at his home in New Haven while outside there's been an explosion of activity: police, Secret Service, media, neighbors, gawkers, and a group of Al Gore's aides from Nashville, who flew in to escort Senator Lieberman back to Nashville, where, as you've been saying, the official announcement will take place tomorrow at 1 o'clock Eastern Time.

The senator will leave shortly. We're told his mother was seen leaving just a moment ago. Just before you threw it to me down here, we saw his mother get in that car parked in the driveway. It took a while to get Senator Lieberman on his way. All these folks around the house -- if the cameras were to pull back, you'd see throngs of people wanting to be the first to get their first wave at the newly chosen Democratic vice president for Al Gore.

The senator will fly to Nashville. That will take about three hours. He will meet up with Al Gore down there, and they'll make their announcement tomorrow. And then he'll be back to Connecticut for campaigning the day after that -- Jan.
