'Jerry Springer' Guests Arrested for Murder

Aired July 29, 2000 - 8:25 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: A man wanted in the killing of his ex-wife after an appearance on "The Jerry Springer Show" is being held without bond in connection with her death. His current wife is being held as a material witness.

As CNN's Susan Candiotti reports, authorities have been looking for the couple for days.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

SUSAN CANDIOTTI, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The couple flew in from Boston to surrender to authorities in Florida. Their attorney told the court Ralf Panitz and his fourth wife Eleanor were not trying to flee and voluntarily contacted the court as soon as they learned police officially issued warrants for their arrest.

SHERIFF GERRY EGGLSTEON, SARASOTA COUNTY, FLORIDA: There was an attorney in Boston that had been contacted by them and that they indicate that they would like to turn themselves in.

CANDIOTTI: Ralf Panitz is charged with first degree murder. Eleanor is being held as a material witness. Both are charged in Monday's beating death of Panitz's ex-wife Nancy. Her body was discovered in a home where all three reportedly lived.

On Monday, Panitz and his wife appeared on a tape segment of "The Jerry Springer Show." They accused ex-wife Nancy Panitz of stalking them and ridiculed her.

ELEANOR PANITZ: You're old. You're fat.

CANDIOTTI: Hours after the show aired, police discovered Nancy Panitz's body at the couple's home. Earlier that same day, Nancy Panitz had obtained a court order to take control of the house based on this recorded testimony.

NANCY PANITZ: He's frequently violent. That morning he had chased me with a knife and made threats about taking my life, ending my life, the way he was going to torture me. CANDIOTTI: Talk show host Jerry Springer rejects any suggestion his program was responsible for Panitz's death. Ralf Panitz is expected to be arraigned in a few weeks. Panitz's wife Eleanor is scheduled to make her next court appearance Tuesday. Both she and her husband are being held without bond.
