Murder Suspect Holding Five People Hostage in Central Florida

Aired July 23, 2000 - 8:05 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: We're going now to central Florida where authorities are trying to put an end to a tense 20-hour hostage stand-off. Police say a man suspected of killing a store clerk is holding five people, including children, hostage at a home just south of Orlando. SWAT team members have been surrounding the home since about noon yesterday.

And joining us now with the very latest is Silke Rible of Central Florida News 13.

Silke, what can you tell us?

SILKE RIBLE, CENTRAL FLORIDA NEWS 13: Well, we are now 20 hours into this hostage situation and there is no clear indication of when it will be ending. Again, the man identified as holding five hostages inside this Meadowbrook home in South Orange County is 41-year-old Jamie Petron. He has five people hostage. Four of those are children, one is an adult.

Now, again, the children range in ages from a 16-year-old girl to an 8-year-old boy, an 11-month-year-old boy and a 9-month-old girl. Now, again, also, one adult inside that house. That adult is the mother of the 8-year-old boy and the 11 month old boy.

Now, when this situation first began there were seven people inside the home. Two escaped shortly after this hostage situation began. One was the grandmother of the 11-month-old hostage child. The other was a male who was also related to the other three children inside that home.

Now, shortly before he escaped, Petron apparently shot him in the mouth, then he escaped. He is now listed in stable condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Now, there is also a second man in the hospital as a result of this hostage situation. He is an Orange County sheriff's deputy. He was shot in the groin shortly before the hostage situation. Apparently he was chasing Petron in his car. Petron hit the sheriff's car with his own, retrieved a gun from his trunk and then shot the deputy in the groin area. He is now also listed in stable condition at Orlando Regional Medical Center.

Now, family and friends of both Jamie Petron and the hostages have been here since the situation began. We understand that Petron has been watching television and we have been airing a plea from his fiance hoping to end the situation safely and soon.

Now, we also understand that he has been talking with Orange County Sheriff's deputies for some time but there's still no clear indication of this ending any time soon -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: All right, Silke Rible with Central Florida News 13. Thanks for that update. We'll continue to follow the story.
