Man Leaves Driver $20,000 Tip

Aired July 22, 2000 - 9:55 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: A limo driver can now afford to take a ride down Easy Street for a change. That's thanks to a nice hunk of change a generous client has left him.

We get more from KTTV reporter Jane Yamamoto.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JANE YAMAMOTO, KTTV-TV REPORTER (voice-over): This is the new Lincoln Town Car hired for the 948-mile trip from Orange County to Oregon. And this is the driver, 42-year-old Major Cephas, who says he loves long road trips, especially this one.

MAJOR CEPHAS, LIMOUSINE DRIVER: I think I got the biggest tip in all of Southern California right now.

YAMAMOTO: The mystery traveler was staying here at the Hyatt Regency Alaconte (ph) near Disneyland.

CEPHAS: When I stuck it in and turned it up for him, he told me he liked my kind of music. So I told him thank you. He laid back down and went to sleep.

YAMAMOTO: His passenger took a walk in a park after they gassed up in Sacramento, and by the time they reached Eugene, Oregon, the guy had moved into the front seat.

CEPHAS: He asked me if I had a family, and I told him I had three kids, a son and two daughters. And he mentioned he would like to have a family someday, and I told him, well, there's a woman out there for you, all you got to do is keep looking.

YAMAMOTO: The 17-hour drive home to Portland cost the man just over $2,000. He charged it, and tacked on a $20,000 tip. You heard me, 20 grand.

CEPHAS: I said, look, it's a little excessive. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate it, but this is a little much. He said, no, anybody that can put up with me deserves it. I said, well, thank you very much.

YAMAMOTO: Major and his family are talking about a possible new house, maybe a vacation, probably a long road trip.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

PHILLIPS: Once again, Jane Yamamoto from KTTV in Los Angeles.
