10 Reported Unharmed in Manhattan Building Collapse

Aired July 13, 2000 - 2:33 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANDRIA HALL, CNN ANCHOR: An update now on a story we brought to you just a few minutes ago. Ten people were injured in New York City, in the East Village, when the wall of a building collapsed in Manhattan. This, according to New York City fire officials.

We want to bring in on the telephone now, Rose Arce, she is one of our CNN producers in New York.

Rose, can tell us the latest there regarding injuries?

ROSE ARCE, CNN PRODUCER: Yes, the latest here from the fire and the police department is that ten people escaped the building, none of them were injured, one additional person had some scratches and is being treated at a local hospital.

HALL: Very fortunate there then, according to these latest reports. And what about the work that was being done on the wall? Can you tell us anything about that, Rose.

ARCE: Apparently, it's an antique store and there's a wall that divides the store itself from a garden area. The police say that they believe that work was illegally being done on the wall. They were trying to open up a door that would've connected the store to a garden and they managed to penetrate a structural wall. And the side of the building essentially collapsed and when that collapsed, it took down the floors inside.

HALL: And so once again, the entire four-story building, that was occupied by a store called "Irreplaceable Artifacts (ph)," one of those walls did collapse.

Rose, how about any other walls of that building, are those secure?

ARCE: They are not sure yet. The wall that collapsed on the side of the building and it effects the back part of the structure. So the entire back part of the structure has been compromised. It's unclear as to whether the front part of the structure will also be compromised.

HALL: So once again, Rose, just to clarify, according to the latest reports you hear, 10 people escaped injury from the scene, is that correct?

ARCE: Yes, 10 people escaped injuries, one was slightly injured.

HALL: All right, we will keep you up-to-date on that story that is continuing to develop in New York City.
