Middle East Peace Talks Getting Under Way

Aired July 11, 2000 - 3:05 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BOBBIE BATTISTA, CNN ANCHOR: Let me interrupt real quickly. We have to return to the newsroom here for some breaking news -- Kyra.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: OK, thanks, Bobbie.

These pictures are just in from camp David in Maryland. This is the first look at Palestinian Leader Yasser Arafat, President Bill Clinton and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak. As you know, the Middle East peace talks are getting under way. We are going to listen in here just for a moment.

QUESTION: How long is it going to take, Mr. President?

WILLIAM J. CLINTON, PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES: We pledged to each other we would answer no questions, offer no comments, so I have to set a good example. You are difficult to resist, but I will make it today at least.

QUESTION: Is what the only agreement you have reached so far?

(LAUGHTER)

CLINTON: That would be answering a question.

QUESTION: Can you tell us about the mood?

CLINTON: Thank you. Thank you.

PHILLIPS: Keeping his promise not to answer any questions, the three leaders wanted to come together, make a joint appearance here before they go into seclusion to begin their talks, and this was pretty humorous here.

(LAUGHTER)

PHILLIPS: It's good to have a little humor there as the three leaders begin to meet. That could be a good sign. We're going to back to Bobbie Battista and TALKBACK LIVE.

BATTISTA: All right, Kyra, thanks very much.
