Vibrant Restaurant Scene Emerges in California Wine Country

Aired July 1, 2000 - 8:57 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, California's wine country is known for what else, wine?

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Duh. It's always nice to have some good food with that good wine.

CNN's Carolyn O'Neil, who has the best job in television, gives you a taste of some of California's best.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

CAROLYN O'NEIL, HOST (voice-over): Since wine is made to complement cuisine, it's only natural a vibrant restaurant scene has emerged in California's wine country.

UNIDENTIFIED NAPA VALLEY RESIDENT: There are more probably good restaurants packed into fewer square miles of countryside in Napa and Sonoma Counties than there are anywhere else in the world.

O'NEIL: At the Napa Valley Grill in Yauntville (ph), executive chef Bob Hurley's dishes are inspired by the region's colorful, fresh ingredients.

BOB HURLEY: This is the halibut with basil pureed potatoes and spring vegetables, including fava beans.

O'NEIL: Also in Yauntville, Bouchon serves food with a French accent. The lively bistro style restaurant features an oyster bar and a full menu of French fare.

UNIDENTIFIED CHEF: Pieces of oven roasted monkfish with carrot, fennel, whole cloves of roasted garlic.

O'NEIL: While Joseph Keller (ph) oversees casual Bouchon, brother Thomas Keller (ph) created the elegant French Laundry. Here, dinner is the evening's main event for guests who linger nearly three hours to savor Keller's celebrated eight to 12 course meals.

THOMAS KELLER: We want them to come in and actually sit down, be very peaceful and enjoy their food over a long period of time.

O'NEIL: But fine food doesn't have to be fancy and in wine country there's a bountiful crop of places to grab a great salad or sandwich. UNIDENTIFIED CHEF: So this one is the roasted pork tenderloin and fontina (ph) cheese and spinach sandwich and this is a turkey and Swiss with apple and red onion.

O'NEIL: The Willow Wood Market in Graton (ph), a tiny town in Sonoma County, attracts locals and visitors in search of seriously good food in a relaxed setting.

UNIDENTIFIED CHEF: And it's fun because customers will come in and they'll see the wood tables or they'll come to a funky town then they'll sit down, all of a sudden they eat the food and they go wow.

O'NEIL (on camera): And enthusiasm for great food and wine goes beyond the restaurants and vineyards of wine country. Cooking classes have become popular ways for food lovers to have fun and learn how to make California cuisine at home.

UNIDENTIFIED INSTRUCTOR: You want it warm because we want to use it after the (unintelligible).

O'NEIL (voice-over): Remiken's Sonoma Valley Culinary School (ph) offers hands on classes for home cooks.

UNIDENTIFIED COOK: I like expanding my repertoire. That's my hobby.

O'NEIL: And with recipes such as rhubarb and apple crisp, participants have a delicious lesson ahead.

UNIDENTIFIED INSTRUCTOR: And they're going to prepare a variety of dishes and at the end they're going to get to sit down and have a nice buffet.

O'NEIL: So from expertly crafted cuisine to laid back lunches, there's a meal to match any mood in California's wine country.

Carolyn O'Neil, CNN, Atlanta.
