Update on Hostage Situation at Walt Disney World Hotel

Aired June 29, 2000 - 4:23 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JAN HOPKINS, HOST: Also, Rhonda Schaffler, we need to interrupt and go back to Lou Waters in Atlanta. There is breaking news -- Lou.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: All right, Jan. We have on the line with us Captain Steve Jones of the Orange County Sheriff's Department keeping watch over the hostage situation at the Boardwalk Inn Hotel in Buena Vista Florida.

Captain, is the situation under control?

CAPT. STEVE JONES, ORANGE CO. SHERIFF'S DEPT.: Well, we still have a hostage situation. We have our professional negotiators on site right, now, trying to work this out to a successful conclusion. We do believe, though we that we have not confirmed, that he his 4- year-old son in the room with him and also a hotel employee that went up there for room service.

HOPKINS: Is he telling you what he wants?

JONES: Pardon? I'm sorry?

HOPKINS: Is he telling you what he wants, what's the problem?

JONES: Right now, all I'm going to say is he's letting us know that he wants to speak with his wife. There is a domestic problem. She has left him. And that is his main demand at this time. Anything else, we are not privileged at this time to talk because it's a serious situation.

HOPKINS: Are there any hotel guests or any other workers in the hotel who might be in any danger?

JONES: We've evacuated the rooms that are in immediate danger to his room. The hotel, basically traveling in and out of the hotel has been shut down, and that's pretty much it right now. The way it's laid out the rooms in any type of danger have been evacuated.

HOPKINS: You have the man isolated and there's no danger to any of the other guests.

JONES: Yes.

HOPKINS: All right, thank you, Captain Steve Jones of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. There you have it, the situation is under control to the extent that the man is being talked with by hostage negotiators with the Orange County Sheriff's Department. He's holding a young boy believed to be around 4 years of age. We're hearing that it might be his own son, also holding a food service worker and demanding to speak with his wife. Some apparent domestic dispute at the root of this. The hostage negotiators continue to do their work. We're continuing to follow the story. As soon as we know more, we'll pass it along.

Now back to Jan in New York.

HOPKINS: Thanks, Lou. ` TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com
