Major League Baseball Slaps Dodgers With Fines, Suspensions

Aired May 27, 2000 - 9:09 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Now on to the base-brawl at a Dodgers-Cubs game on May 16. The Cubs say there'll be less beer and more security at Wrigley Field from now on. And a Chicago fan arrested after the melee is suing both teams and some Dodgers players for injuries he sustained.

And that's not all, says CNN's Jim Hill.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

JIM HILL, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): Keep your eye on the ball and your mind off the brawl. Not easy if you're one of 16 Los Angeles Dodgers and three coaches hit with one of the biggest suspensions ever in major league baseball.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The penalties were severe, excessive, harsh, maybe even cruel.

HILL: Pitcher Darren Dreifort and sluggers Gary Sheffield, Eric Karros, and Shawn Green are among the Dodgers suspended from three to eight games for going into the Wrigley Field stands on May 16 after a Chicago Cubs fan allegedly struck the Dodgers' backup catcher, Chad Kreuter, and stole his hat.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

BASEBALL ANNOUNCER: Folks, this is an absolute disgrace.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

HILL: With the epic suspensions handed out by former all-star Frank Robinson in the baseball commissioner's office, and three Cubs fans arrested for disorderly conduct, there is more than enough blame to go around.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Why not the Cub organization for letting that insanity go on?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You can't go into the stands, can't assault people and get away with it.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: (inaudible) is nothing (inaudible) here at Dodger Stadium. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I think what baseball needs to do, and the individual clubs need to do, is have additional security there so something like this cannot happen.

HILL (on camera): Some see this as more than a big penalty for a big brawl. They wonder if it could be a season-wrecker for the Dodgers and their fans.

UNIDENTIFIED VENDOR: Get your Dodger programs here.

DAVEY JOHNSON, DODGERS MANAGER: I think everybody loses. I mean, any time, you know, your better players are not on the field, you know, competing...

HILL: The players' suspensions add up to 60 games in a season that has 117 remaining. And the commissioner's office, not the team, decides which players sit out which games.

BOB DALEY, DODGERS OWNER: It's going to have a major effect on our season.

UNIDENTIFIED VENDOR: (inaudible) pizza.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: The fans are the big losers.

HILL: Maybe. The Dodgers are appealing the suspensions. One Chicago fan is suing for assault. As Yogi Berra once said, it ain't over till it's over.

Jim Hill, CNN, Los Angeles.
