| Breaking NewsCampaign Finance Task Force Interviews President, Vice PresidentAired April 21, 2000 - 6:20 p.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. JUDY WOODRUFF, CNN ANCHOR: There is some news just breaking at this hour. For that, we go to the White House and CNN correspondent Major Garrett -- Major. MAJOR GARRETT, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Yes, Judy, the White House has just announced that President Clinton and Vice President Gore were interviewed this week by the Justice Department's campaign finance task force. The White House says the president voluntarily submitted to an interview by the task force on April 21st and that the vice president voluntarily submitted himself to an interview on April 18. The White House stresses that the conversations with the Justice Department task force were voluntary, but it's giving out no details about the contents or any of the questions asked or answers provided by either the vice president or the president -- Judy. WOODRUFF: Major, what is the mission of this task force? GARRETT: Well, the task force is set up and designed to develop as much information as it can about any possible violations of law in campaign financing, and it recently expanded its inquiry to deal with White House e-mail that were not provided under subpoena to various government agencies, including Congress and the independent counsel's office. That was a recent expansion of this campaign finance task force's obligations and duties. We have no idea that those questions were put to the president or the vice president. But we do know for a fact that both were interviewed this week under the campaign task force's mandate. WOODRUFF: All right, CNN White House correspondent Major Garrett, thanks very much.
