Detroit Tigers Get Ready to Play Ball in New Home

Aired April 2, 2000 - 8:49 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Well, the media gets to see the inside of Comerica Park today, the glitzy new home of the Detroit Tigers. It's a mile away from Tiger Stadium, a site that was home to Detroit baseball for 103 years.

Bill Gallagher of CNN affiliate WJBK in Detroit pursued rumors that Tiger Stadium may still see some action this spring.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

BILL GALLAGHER, WJBK CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): It's a field of dreams certainly being built and they will come, that's if the new ball park is ready.

TYLER BARNES, TIGERS' SPOKESMAN: The park will be ready. We were just over there this morning. All the seats are in, the field is ready to go, most of the concession stands are ready. But everything will be fully operational opening day.

GALLAGHER: Workers are busy wrapping up the project and the ball club admits the pressure's on to get everything ready for the April 11th opening day.

BARNES: There's some things to be done with the water feature, which is the liquid fireworks. Again, make -- getting the equipment in the kitchen areas. Most of it right now is finishing work, though, some carpentry, a lot of sweeping up to do.

GALLAGHER: So what about the persistent rumor that the Tigers plan to have opening day at Comerica and return to Michigan and Trumble for some games while the finishing touches are put on the new ballpark?

BARNES: There's no truth to that. We're ready to go. If you went over there today, you could play a ballgame out there.

GALLAGHER: Problem solves checked out Tiger Stadium and the grass is green there and you could imagine the cry "play ball!" But you heard from the Tigers, it's their final answer.

(on camera): In the worst case scenario as a backup position, is Tiger Stadium ready if the team had to play here?

BARNES: There is no backup. No backup at all. GALLAGHER (voice-over): Problem solvers will keep a close watch on the new ball park as opening day approaches.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

LIN: Again, that report from Bill Gallagher of CNN affiliate WJBK in Detroit.
