INS Postpones Elian Gonzalez' Parole Decision

Aired March 30, 2000 - 5:22 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BERNARD SHAW, CNN ANCHOR: We're interrupting Bruce Morton's piece to go live to a Miami news conference following a day-long meeting session with Justice Department officials, and Elian Gonzalez family members and supporters.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

JOSE GARCIA PEDROSA, GONZALEZ FAMILY ATTORNEY: ... until at least Tuesday morning at 9:00. In addition, the government has agreed that between now and Tuesday morning at 9:00, they will not attempt to take Elian away. Let me say that in Spanish please.

(SPEAKING IN SPANISH)

Thank you very much.

SHAW: OK, that was attorney Jose Garcia Pedrosa. He said at the beginning of the statement that there has been no agreement reached between the family negotiating and talking with Justice Department officials and officials from the Immigration and Naturalization Service. He said there would be no ruling until 9:00 a.m. Tuesday. He also said that Justice Department officials agreed with the family that the U.S. government would not take away Elian Gonzalez before that time. That's the very latest, and it follows a day-long series of meetings with Justice Department officials in Miami.

INSIDE POLITICS will be right back.
